Glenside Avenue and a number of on site
retaining walls.

Highlights: Evolve, a manufacturer of light
weight pre-cast concrete products opened
operations in the previously occupied
“Fleetwood Plant” in Hancock, MD.
Renovations included construction of a
loading dock/ ramp, installation of silos
and a mixing platform. At least 60 new
jobs will be created within the first three
(3) years of opening.

in Hagerstown. The company purchased the
former Kongsberg Automotive building on
Western Maryland Parkway and invested
approximately $6.5M in capital
improvements.

Project Highlights: This existing bowling
alley was completely demolished inside
and then remodeled. The bathrooms
were reconfigured to become ADA
compliant. The renovations created 22
Brunswick lanes featuring the latest 46”
LCD automatic scoring monitors, video
screens for viewing sports, music videos
and movies, along with the cutting
edge sound and lighting effects.

Project Highlights: The STEM building is a green, sustainable and energy efficient building.
The building has many environmental features including sun shades on the outside to
diffuse light entering the building; a system on the third, fourth and fifth floors to catch
rainwater for gray water reuse; and better indoor air quality. Eventually this building will
have solar panels and a green roof.
The five story, 65,000 square foot structure will house the science programs that were in
the science building as well as the alternative energy technology, information systems
technology, engineering and math programs.

Project Highlights: Lehigh Phoenix, a leading provider of book components and short run
books for the trade and educational publishing segments, constructed a 28,000 square feet
addition to their existing 180,000 square foot facility. The project received “Fast Track”
designation for plan review and permitting from Washington County officials. Timely review
and permitting was necessary to help Lehigh Phoenix reach its time critical objective of
having the addition completed by Spring 2012.
“Lehigh Phoenix’s decision to expand and add jobs speaks volumes about the highly-skilled
workforce, strategic location and supportive business climate that Maryland and Washington
County offer to companies,” said DBED Secretary Christian S. Johansson. “We were
particularly pleased to work with our partners in Washington County to support this project,
which will bring additional jobs to Hagerstown and help grow the local economy.”

site uses porous pavement in combination
with linear micro bioretention facilities to
treat runoff from new impervious surfaces.
This project was the first in Washington
County to utilize porous pavers as an onsite
at the source technique to treat stormwater
runoff.

Project Highlights: The expansion of the
Sunny Meadows Garden Center
greenhouses included the addition of
underground cisterns for stormwater
management. This innovative approach
allows the business owner the
opportunity to reuse the stormwater
runoff collected from the rooftops of the
greenhouses. This project is the first to
use cisterns in Washington County for
stormwater runoff under the new ESD
to the MEP Stormwater Management.

Project Highlights: The construction of a new
three story commercial office building at
the site of the old Martins store took
advantage of the new EDC sponsored
pad-ready program to expedite aspects of
the county’s planning and review process,
and defer and waives some costs. In
addition, this building, aiming for LEED
Silver standards will apply for the EDC
sponsored high performance tax credit
program, receiving property tax credits
as a building that meet certain “green”
standards.

First Solar and First Energy

Project Highlights: On July 7, 2012, First Solar and Solar Energy broke ground
on their 160 acre solar farm project located on the grounds of the Maryland
Correctional Institution (MCI) in Hagerstown. Once built, the Maryland Solar
project will produce 20 megawatts of power - enough clean energy to power
approximately 2,700 Maryland homes, displacing approximately 23,000
metric tons of CO2 annually - the equivalent of taking 4,400 cars off the road
each year. The project will create 125 construction jobs and at least three full
time jobs will be created for the lifetime of the panels on the site.

Project Highlights: A 1.5-megawatt solar energy system was constructed at Staples
distribution center in Hagerstown, Maryland, the world’s largest supplier of office
products, making it the largest host of solar energy generation in the state. SunEdison, a
solar energy project developer and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE:WFR),
financed and built the Staples solar installation. When combining this newest installation
with a 1-MW solar energy system at Staples, the company is now expected to produce
nearly 60 million kilowatt-hours of solar clean energy over the next 20 years. That is
enough juice to power the equivalent of 5,500 average U.S. homes for a full calendar
year. Mark Buckley, Vice President of environmental affairs for Staples, says this latest
installation solidifies the company’s commitment to sustainability.
