Audience Memo
Highway U-111 stretches and curves along the west bench of Salt Lake County from Herriman to
Magna City It is divided into three different jurisdictions; New Bingham Highway to SR 201 (2100 South
Freeway) falls under the State’s jurisdiction, New Bingham Highway to Old Bingham Highway is West
Jordan’s responsibility, and South Jordan and Salt Lake County have everything south of Old Bingham
Highway. Each jurisdiction is obligated to absorb the costs of any improvements or repairs made in their
portion. Safety improvements need to be made along all of U – 111, therefore responsible parties in all
jurisdictions must be reached. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) would be my first priority
since they represent the state and the state has the largest portion of the road. Salt Lake County and South
Jordan officials would be the second priority because they hold the second largest portion. Surprisingly West
Jordan City is only responsible for a one mile stretch of the road and have 50 percent of the jurisdiction for
the Old Bingham and U-111 intersection. A fatal accident recently occurred there in February of this year
making it would be beneficial to give my proposal to West Jordan City as well.
The history of U-111 shows that if enough people petition for improvements then the
improvements are made. A PowerPoint presentation allows me to reach out to all three jurisdictions and it
permits me to educate residents in the community affected by this dangerous road. It helps me to come face
to face with these people, which helps me to be more effective and more successful. Letters, articles and
videos can be skimmed over, thrown away or deleted. A live presentation is harder to brush under the table,
especially when there is a group of voting residents sitting in the room.
Monthly city meetings permit me to go and present my proposal to officials and to the public.
“The squeaky wheel gets the grease,” so the more I squeak the more successful I’ll be. UDOT also holds
public meetings and events that would allow me to share my concerns in person.

Not only would it be more cost affective it
could prevent tragedies from happening.
