248th ACS National Meeting San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014 Chemistry and Global Stewardship Robin D. Rogers Department of Chemistry and Center for Green Manufacturing The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa, AL 35487 USA 248th ACS San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014 Chemistry and Global Stewardship This theme is focused on global aspects of the chemical enterprise related to sustainability of world resources, including green chemistry, the globalization of chemistry, and the responsibilities and opportunities chemists have to serve the broader public. Divisional programming and special themed symposia will cover the role and interplay of science, technology, innovation, and economic development in world stewardship of precious, limited resources while providing physical and economic security for all world citizens. Where possible international perspectives will be provided related to both areas of critical need, such as the supply of clean water and energy to all citizens of the world, and to overcoming the limitations or restrictions of raw materials for products which lead to improved quality of life. Methods to reach out to the public to better educate students and all citizens on the nature and uses of chemistry and efforts to enhance cooperation among chemists around the globe will be highlighted. 248th ACS San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014 Chemistry and Global Stewardship Plenary Session: • The Kavli Foundation Innovations in Chemistry Lecture: Joan Brennecke, Notre Dame Energy Center, University of Notre Dame: TBA • Pedro Alvarez, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rice University: Environmental implications and applications of nanotechnology • Paul Anastas, Center for Green Chemistry & Engineering, Yale University: Rational Design of Chemical Products and Processes • Walter Leitner, Institut für Technische Chemie und Makromolekulare Chemie, RWTH Aachen University, Germany: Catalysis as Key Science and Technology for Sustainable Chemical Supply Chains • Invited: Ms. Christiana Figueres, Executive Secretary United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change: (longshot) • Invited: Nitesh Mehta, Director of Newreka Green Synth Technologies Pvt Ltd, Mumbai, India: Enviropreneurship • The Kavli Foundation Emerging Leader in Chemistry Lecture: TBA 248th ACS San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014 Chemistry and Global Stewardship Sub Themes: • Alternatives to Chemicals Facing Critical Sustainability Constraints: David Constable, ACS Green Chemistry Institute, TBA • Crop, Environment, and Public Health Protection: Technologies for a Changing World: Cathleen Hapeman, USDA-Agricultural Research Service; Laura McConnell, USDA-Agricultural Research Service; Ken Racke, Dow AgroSciences, AGRO • Communicating to the Public and the Role of Social Media: Maureen Rouhi, Editor-in-Chief Chemical & Engineering News, TBA • Global Stewardship by Increasing Climate Science Literacy: Keith Peterman and Gregory Foy, York College of Pennsylvania, CHED • Global Stewardship of Critical Materials: Bruce Moyer and Sheng Dai, Oak Ridge, TBA • The Role of Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Economic Development in Sustainability: Dan Daly, The University of Alabama, BMGT/SCHB • 100th Anniversary of the ENVR Division: Tracy Williamson, EPA, ENVR Global Stewardship by Increasing Climate Science Literacy Organizers: Keith Peterman and Gregory Foy, York College of Pennsylvania peterman@ycp.edu gfoy@ycp.edu This will be a student-focused symposium with primarily student presenters. Primary Organizer: Dr. Kenneth Racke, Global Research and Development, Dow AgroSciences, Indianapolis, USA, kracke@dow.com ACS GREEN CHEMISTRY INSTITUTE® Alternatives to chemicals facing critical sustainability constraints Chemists love to use elements and molecules in new and interesting ways in their pursuit of “good science.” Novel catalysts, unique properties, intellectual property protection or creation, publication in prestigious journals, etc. Such drivers have spurred chemists down this path since the industrial revolution. It could be argued, however, that “good science” turns a blind eye towards the environmental, social and economic implications that known reserves of critical materials are being rapidly depleted and dispersed in products in such a way that makes recycling and reuse difficult if not nearly impossible using current separation technologies. This session is intended to highlight issues associated with materials in critical supply and change the fallacious “good science” argument to one of a pursuit of the best possible science – science that is sustainable. 248th ACS San Francisco, August 10-14, 2014 Chemistry and Global Stewardship LOCAL CONCURRENT WORKSHOPS (IN PROGRESS): • An International Undergraduate Summit on Global Climate Change (via Webinar worldwide) • Small Business: The Role of the Entrepreneur in Stewardship/How to Get Started (via Webinar series; Dan Daly, The University of Alabama) • Undergraduate/graduate poster sessions/receptions with Plenary/Presidential speakers • Exploratorium Event Webinar: An International Student Summit on Global Climate Change Organizers and Moderators: Gregory Foy and Keith Peterman, York College of Pennsylvania gfoy@ycp.edu peterman@ycp.edu This will be a student-focused summit with primarily student participants CHED: Division Sponsor; CEI: Co-sponsor Invited participants will include college and university students from around the globe. o Students will speak from on-location in their home countries o Eight to ten student presenters o Each presentation supported by power point slides International student presenters will participate through video conferencing software Other students will be encouraged to comment via twitter A panel discussion with Q&A will follow the formal presentations
