“The interesting thing about cloud
computing is that we’ve redefined
cloud computing to include
everything that we already do. I can’t
think of anything that isn’t cloud
computing with all of these
announcements. The computer
industry is the only industry that is
more fashion-driven than women’s
fashion.
Maybe I’m an idiot, but I have no
idea what anyone is talking about.
What is it? It’s complete gibberish.
It’s insane. When is this idiocy going
to stop?”

What is the cloud?
“An architecture that provides scalable,
Internet-accessible services.”
Poll
“What is your number one goal in using cloud services?)
– Flexibility to access data
– Improved Backup & Business Continuity
– Lower IT Costs
– Access to the most recent technology
Cloud Diagram
Public Cloud
Public clouds—IT activities/functions are provided “as a service,”
over the Internet, which allows access to technology enabled
services without knowledge of, expertise with, or control over
the technology infrastructure that supports them.
-IBM “Dispelling the Vapor around Cloud Computing”, June 2010
Private Cloud
Private clouds—activities and functions are provided “as a service,” over a
company’s intranet. It is built by an organization for its own users, and
everything is delivered within the organization’s firewall (instead of the
Internet). The private cloud owner does not share resources with any other
companies, so multitenancy is not an issue
-IBM “Dispelling the Vapor around Cloud Computing”, June 2010
Hybrid Cloud
Hybrid clouds—the external and internal service delivery
methods are integrated. Rules and policies are established by the
organization based on factors such as security needs, criticality
and underlying architecture, so that activities and tasks are
allocated to external or internal clouds as appropriate.

the user retain all copyrights to your photos
and videos, it’s your content. Our terms state
by uploading content to Twitpic you allow us
to distribute that content on twitpic.com and

Twitter). If you delete a photo or video from
Twitpic, that content is no longer viewable.”

The opportunity
• National organization offices in 5 Regions
• 14 Local Offices, with 40 staff and 500
volunteers + mobile Executive Directors – all
need shared access to files.
• Big concern: Inconsistent back-ups at Local
Offices and no back-ups of ED laptops
The requirements
• Store and share files across Local Offices,
remote locations
• Eventually collaborate with National Office
• Have consistent and reliable back-up
• Not require unique logins for volunteers
• Minimal staff training
The requirements
• Avoid downloading and uploading documents
• Avoid learning a new software (training issue)
• Dream: have Office Productivity software
integrated
• Ability to centrally manage from National
Office

Cloud Migration Best Practices
• It’s not all or nothing
• New services, consider
the cloud
• Existing Services, start
with low impact apps
• Gain experience &
momentum
Cloud Migration Best Practices
• Know your
requirements
• Develop a plan
• Identify project lead
• Start with a pilot group
• Provide training
• Get feedback
• Understanding of cloud
architecture
• Overview of cloud services
Key Take Aways
– Iaas, PaaS, SaaS
• Knowing the risks
• Migration best practices
– It’s not all or nothing
– Manage as you would any
other IT project
– Out of sight ≠ out of mind
