PowerOneData (P1DI) offers Genii, an innovative meter data management system that is available in an
affordable and subscription-based software-as-a-service model for utilities, cities, and commercial
building owners. To keep up with consumer growth, utilities and other distributors of electricity have
been challenged by the need to continually add servers, increase storage space, and maintain networks.
By moving its application to Windows Azure’s cloud, P1DI is able to ensure scalability to meet customer
demand and manage applications, while utilities need only pay for the actual resources used.

WINDOWS AZURE CASE STUDY
PowerOneData developed a complex MSSQL database application
that it easily adapted to Windows Azure. P1DI hosts each utility’s data
in a separate, secure instance. Smart meters upload consumption data
to the cloud, where both utilities and consumers have instant access.
Communication is two way, so meters can be updated with the latest
rates, prepaid balances, or even disconnected remotely.
BENEFITS:
•
•
•
Stability: Genii is installed on the powerful, secure Windows
Azure cloud. Data and system redundancy is built in.
Quick deployment: Deployment is instantaneous, giving new
consumers immediate access to their data.
Accessible and compatible: Anywhere they are, utilities and
consumers can track and control energy in real time.
