In a recent speech to villagers in Rajasthan, Rural Development
Minister advised young women
* Not to consider marrying a suitor unless he has an indoor
toilet.
* Only 50% of households in the world's second-most populated
country have indoor toilets, making India the 'world's largest
open-air toilet‘
* We in India have more Mobile phones than indoor sanitation
facilities

(IPSC) is an initiative under the
National
Skill
Development
Corporation (NSDC)
IPSC formed to cater to the need for skilled manpower for the
plumbing industry in India and abroad

Plumbing Sector – Overview
 Size of plumbing industry – 7.5% to 15% the size of construction industry
[Size of construction industry – Rs 330,000 Crore in 2010-11]
 Manpower requirement – 2.5% of manpower in construction industry
[Currently, 33 million people employed in construction industry]
 More than 70% of the plumbers come from Orissa (Kendrapada District)
 Organized workforce to Unorganized workforce = 10:90
 Most of the skill learning in the industry happens through unstructured, on-the
job training (OJT)
 The industry has three main segments:

Manufacturers of plumbing related products

 Apart from construction, plumbing is now being frequently used for different
services: Water supply; Sewage and drainage; Gas supply; Water treatment; Fire
fighting; Industrial waste management; and Air conditioning.
 Plumbing products have also got advanced in terms of technology, so their
installation and servicing requires highly skilled labor force.
 Plumbers & Contractors in the construction industry – CAGR of about 11.1%
 Plumbing Consultant – Specialized role has existed for last 35 years but has gained
momentum in the last 10 years
 Recently, besides Civil & Mechanical Engineers, Draftsmen, Quantity Surveyors,
Design Engineers, Computer operators (CAD), Environment Engineers have started
joining Plumbing Consultant segment.
