ASHA—The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association the professional, scientific, and credentialing (资格认证) association for 140,000 members and affiliates(使并入) who are speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists in the United States and internationally. ASHA uses the term credentialing to refer to a type of designation, award, status, recognition. The term can refer to either individuals or organizations that have been assessed or evaluated in some manner and determined to meet certain qualifications, requirements, or standards. ASHA currently administers four different credentialing programs that span the continuum of professional development: academic program accreditation clinical certification continuing education provider clinical specialty recognition Beginning: ASHA‘s rich history began in 1925 at an informal meeting of the National Association of Teachers of Speech (NATS) in Iowa City, IA. NATS was an organization made up of people working in the areas of rhetoric(修辞) debate and theater. Its members were becoming increasingly interested in speech correction and wanted to establish an organization to promote "scientific, organized work in the field of speech correction." Accordingly, in December of that year, the American Academy of Speech Correction-ASHA's original predecessor-was born. Process: Since the establishment of the American Academy of Speech Correction, the association changed its name 4 times before ultimately settling on the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association: 1925-American Academy of Speech Correction, it original predecessor 1927-American Society for the Study of Disorders of Speech 1934-American Speech Correction Association 1947-American Speech and Hearing; Association 1978-American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Now: ASHA has been the guardian of these professions for over 75 years, initiating the development of national standards for audiologists and for speech-language pathologists and certifying professionals for 55 years. ASHA has grown exponentially since its inception-from 25 members in 1925 to 130,000 in 2008. ASHA opened its first National office on January 1, 1958 in Washington, DC. The association subsequently moved 4 times, most recently settling in its currently location in Rockville, MD in 2008. VISION: Making effective communication, a human right, accessible and achievable for all Mission Empowering and supporting speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists by: Advocating on behalf of persons with communication and related disorders Advancing communication science Promoting effective human communication Strategic Objectives Strategic Objectives are action-oriented statements of what must be done to be successful and define the Association's strategic intent. Following are the Strategic Objectives and associated outcomes identified for ASHA's Strategic Pathway to Excellence: Enhance Member Satisfaction Enhance Effectiveness Across Professions and Settings Increase Reimbursement and Funding Increase Research Commitment Increase the Number, Diversity, and Cultural Competence of the Membership Increase Grassroots Advocacy by Members, Consumers, and Stakeholders Increase Active Involvement of Members Enhance Financial Stewardship Improve the Science Base Improve External Communication Improve Data Collection and Decision-Making Increase Knowledge and Internal Communications Improve Technology and Infrastructure Strengthen Strategic Relationships The Honors of the Association recognizes distinguished contribution to the field of speech, language, and hearing and is the highest honor the Association can give. Members are encouraged to nominate individuals who are well known throughout the nation and the world for a lifetime of innovative clinical practice, insightful and rigorous research, creative administration, effective legislative activity, outstanding teaching, or other distinguished professional contribution. Honors may be awarded to an individual whose contributions have been confined to a single one of the above areas. Although typically conferred near the end of a professional career, the quality of the achievements and their impact on the professions are of greater importance than length of service.
