Class of 2015
Taylor has been involved in computer programming for about four years,
each year learning and developing more and more skills. In 8th and 9th
grade, she participated in the New Mexico Supercomputing challenge. This
involved spending a weekend at New Mexico Tech in Socorro, NM and
taking a series of classes related to science, technology, engineering, and
math. Then, over the course of the next year, she developed a computer
model, collected data, analyzed the results, and wrote a paper
summarizing the process. In 8th grade, Taylor modeled the spread of
cholera in an earthquake relief camp in Haiti, and found several
approaches to preventing further spread of the disease. As a freshman,
she modeled the depletion of a New Mexico Aquifer. For her project
involving aquifers, she and her partner were recognized for having the
“Best Ecosystem Model.” This year she is teaching an introductory
programming class at a local elementary school.

Emma's interest in computing came about through involvement in her high
school's STEM Program, Through the program she has competed in many
local and international robotics and computing competitions including, B.E.S.T.
(Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) Robotics, FRC (FIRST
Robotics Competition), Botball, Supercomputing Challenge and other STEM
related programs. Emma has taken on difficult leadership roles in the STEM
program and in her school, being elected as class Vice President for three of
her four years in high school. She also has taken on leadership roles for all
competitions, successfully being the team leader of the 2012 State Champion
BEST Robotics Team. In school Emma is a highly dedicated student, working
hard to maintain a high GPA, and keeping up with numerous extracurricular
activities. She has taken dual credit classes through high school and plans to
attend university with a computing and engineering based major. Emma will be
graduating this year with honors, as class Salutatorian and attending the New
Mexico State University in the fall.

Danielle's love of technology started in her 9th grade year when she joined her
school's Botball team. They placed 1st their first year and attended Botball's
International Competition. For the past three years, Danielle has participated in
B.E.S.T. (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) Robotics, FIRST
Robotics, Botball, and The Supercomputing Challenge. In BEST Robotics,
Danielle won first place in Engineering Notebook. In Botball, she was a captain
and received 5th place and a Judges Choice Award and currently is a coach of
a The School of Dreams Academy Middle School team. In FIRST Robotics,
she was chosen to be the Head of Robot Building. Danielle's extra-curricular
actives include; giving presentations, community outreach with the use of
robotics, and playing her instrument for her school band, a Bass Clarinet, and
attending college classes at the UNM-Valencia Campus. Danielle's future plans
are to attend University of California at Santa Barbra, New Mexico Tech, or
University of California at Santa Cruz to combined Marine Biology and
Computer Science.

Chloe attends the School of Dreams Academy and has been participating in
STEM-CS related programs since she was in middle school. Chloe has
participated and had success in robotics competitions including B.E.S.T.
Robotics, FIRST Robotics, SuperComputing Challenge, ISEF, Envirothon,
Autonomous Aerial Vehicle Contest, and Botball. She was chosen as the
recipient for the New Mexico Affiliate NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing,
and a runner-up for the National NCWIT Award. At the 2012 GCER, she was also
chosen for the Outstanding Intuitive and Achievement award. She has been
taking courses at a local college since her freshman year and plans to graduate
from high school with both her high school diploma and an associate’s degree in
pre-engineering.

Keva’s interest in computing was sparked in high school, with her involvement in
B.E.S.T. (Boosting Engineering Science and Technology) Robotics. The first year
it competed her team placed third, which made it eligible to compete in the
Midwestern region. Keva was personally awarded for creating the first-place tshirt and the first-place website. Keva also enjoys participating in Botball. Last
year Keva was made captain of her Botball team, which won Overall
Documentation and third place overall. In school Keva is currently taking college
courses alongside her high school courses. She hopes to have an influence on
her fellow students in encouraging them to do as much as they can in school.
Outside of school, her team attends different fairs to show their robots and
educate the community about robotics and technology.

Alexandra began programming in middle school with a brief summer course on
Java. She was so excited by it that she used it for her science fair project where
she won first place in Computer Science at region and state science fairs.
Alexandra has won top of category at the regional science fair and was a finalist
at the International Science and Engineering Fair. She also won 3rd place and a
creativity award at the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge, 2nd at the
regional science fair, and 2nd in category at the state science fair. She has served
as treasurer, and as vice president for the Science Olympiad team at her school.
She has also participated in the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge and has
volunteered at the National Museum of Nuclear Science in History as counselor
for their summer classes. Alexandra wants to study computer science in college
and pursue a PhD. She would also like to start her own company to develop new
technologies.

Rachel is a senior at Los Alamos High School. She began programming in middle
school when she first participated in the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge
and has placed in the top three for several years. Through technology, she has
further pursued her interests in math and science. Apart from a few courses,
including an independent study online AP Comp. Sci. class in 8th grade, she has
mostly explored technology on her own time with the mentorship of her father and
brother. In the last year, Rachel was lead author on a journal paper about hashbased algorithms that is now in revision. She also spent the last summer working
in atmospheric modeling as a student at Los Alamos National Lab. In her free
time, Rachel enjoys whitewater kayaking and rock climbing.

Ceryndipity is interested in all kinds of technology, including programming. Last
year she created a website to sell crafts that she had made in order to raise money
for local charities. It took her almost a semester to complete the website, but at the
end of the semester the site was usable, and had multiple pages and links. This
year, she is participating in the Supercomputing Challenge, where she hopes to
model the effects of power stations for the Tesla, an electric car. Ceryn would like to
pursue a career in biomedical engineering, which combines her passion of
engineering with her goal of becoming a doctor. Biomedical engineering is the
perfect mix of the two because she is able to help people while using her
engineering skills.

Paige's interest in computing and engineering started in Junior High with her
involvement in Science Olympiad. Her team received 4th place in the regional
competition and qualified to compete in state finals. She personally received 1st
place mousetrap vehicle (regional) 2nd place mousetrap vehicle (state finals).
She strives to partake in as many robotics competitions as she can; with an
ambition of gaining more experience in engineering and computing. Outside of
school Paige enjoys cheer-leading, dance, and acting, along with being involved
in her church youth group. In the near future she aspires to use her problem
solving abilities to solve world problems.

Taylor's passion for robotics started in 8th grade; beginning her involvement with
Botball. She was in charge of programming and was very successful by receiving
4th place overall and 2nd in seeding. In Junior High she was chosen to participate
in FRC (First Robotics Competition) receiving the rookie inspirational award.
Taylor is currently taking a college credit course along with her high school
courses. During her free time she is involved in cheer-leading, dance, acting, art,
and is a member of her church youth group. Taylor aspires to be the very best she
can, as Eleanor Roosevelt said, "With the new day comes new strength and new
thoughts".

Maria is a Junior at the School of Dreams Academy. She has participated in
BEST Robotics where the team won first place overall along with first place
engineering notebook. She also competed in Botball in both the New Mexico and
Oklahoma regions. Maria was the team captain for her schools 2013 FIRST
Robotics team. She also takes concurrent enrollment at the University of New
Mexico Valencia Campus and is working toward an associate degree in general
science. Maria encourages other students to become involved in robotics and
hopes to be an influential role model in the community.

Victoria is a freshman attending the School of Dreams Academy. She began
participating in Science, Robotic's and Technology competitions during 8th
grade. Victoria was a team member of the Science Olympiad Competition. She
has served as captain of the middle school Botball 2012 team, and head
designer for the High School Botball team 2013. Victoria also served as
marketing manager of BEST Robotics where the team won first place overall
and first place engineering notebook. She was also member of the FIRST
robotics team. Victoria is also taking dual credit college courses though the
University of New Mexico Valencia Campus. Victoria enjoys these competitions
and plans on pursuing an Engineering/Technology degree.

Mr. Edington has been an inspiration to everyone including me,
taking the extra time for each student, staying the long hours
school. He is thinking about opening a thrift store and all the profits
are going to the schools robotics team so we don’t have to spend
all of our time looking for sponsors. Overall, Mr. Edington puts
others before himself.
Mr. Edington has influenced me in my decisions about my future. It
is because of him that I will soon be going to college next semester.
Being a girl in my teacher’s class is great because I feel that I can
show the boys in the classroom that it is not only a mans job. It is
also a good feeling knowing that I am helping the increasing
number of women in Engineering and Computer Science.
