Why is it called “The Flipped Classroom”?
Early on the “flipped classroom”
referred to a method of instruction
where classroom-based teaching
time and traditional "homework"
time were reversed (flipped).
A Change in Pedagogy
Traditional
• Lectures are
teacher directed
• Lessons
introduced
during class
• Students complete
assignments at
home
Flipped
• Students centered
• Content introduced at
home
• Students apply it at
school
• Teachers provide
more one-on-one
assistance
Rethinking Class Time
• Most of the videos will cover Bloom’s Taxonomy
levels for remembering and understanding
• Class time can be spent applying what students are
learning
You to
spend
more
time
teaching
at the
upper
levels
The Flipped Classroom “At Home”
• Material in videos can be reviewed as needed
• Students learn at their pace
• Provides remediation for students falling behind
• Online forums (i.e. Piazza) find students
collaborating before class begins
The Flipped Classroom “At School”
• Students with similar abilities are
found collaborating
• Students and teacher interactions
are genuine
• Teacher has time to work with
each student everyday
• Time for differentiated instruction
• Teacher can assess learning as it
is occurring
• Online forums promote class wide
discussions.

happening
during
class, if the
majority of
your time
isn’t spent
lecturing?

• Jing (Free)
How much time
does it take to
create a
presentation?
• EudCreations
• Screencast-o-matic
• ScreenChop
• Skitch (Mac)
• Explain Everything app for iPad
Adding a Quiz Component
• Use Camtasia to add quiz questions to the
video timeline and have results emailed to
you
• Use Google Docs to create a quiz with
answers sent to a spreadsheet
Video Storage
• District Servers
• YouTube Edu
• ScreenCast
• Teaching Channel
• Edmodo
• EduCreations
• Screencast-o-matic
• EduVision TV
How Do I Get Started?
• Don’t do your whole curriculum
