• The Mariel Boatlift’s were
large groups of Cubans
who departed from the
Mariel Harbor in Cuba to
the United States in seek
of a better economy and
safer life.
when was it?
• This began on April 15th,
1980.
when it ended?
• The Mariel Boatlifts
ended on October 31st,
1980.
where was it?
• Took place in Cuba
and the United
States.
• Specifically in
Southern Florida of
the United States.
How many?
• Over 125,000 Cubans
arrived in the United
States with only about
10,000 being
documented.
What key people were
involved?
• The president of Cuba,
Fidel Castro who allowed
the mass exodus of
Cubans to leave Cuba.
• The president of the
United States, Jimmy
Carter who dealt with the
implications.
How it started
• On April 1st, 1980 Hector
Sanyustiz took control of a
bus and crashed it into the
fence of the Peruvian
Embassy.
• The Cuban guards then
began to open fire on the
bus.
• Caught in a crossfire, one
of the the Cuban guards
was shot and killed.
How it started continued..
• The five individuals on the bus
who killed one of the guards, took
dramatic measures to reach the
Peruvian Embassy in seek of
political asylum.
• Ernesto Pinto-Bazurco, the head
person of the Peruvian Embassy
granted the asylum.
• When the Embassy refused to
give up the five individuals to the
Cuban government, Fidel Castro
ordered the guards off the
Embassy grounds.
how it started continued...
• After that, thousands of
Cubans began rushing into
the Embassy in seek of
political asylum.
• In reaction to this, Fidel
ordered the guards back on
the grounds, blocking off the
streets.
• Angered by the large amount
of Cubans occupying the
Embassy, Fidel announced
any Cubans wanting to leave
the country could.

U.S. Coast Guard was
constantly on guard.
• The U.S. Army was waiting
on land for the arrival of
Cubans to take them to
refugee camps.
• A total of 27 migrants died
on their journey to the United
States, and 14 of them died
due to an overpacked ship
that tipped over.

• When President Carter
found out a number of the
Cubans arriving to the
United States were
prisoners, and mentally ill,
an agreement was
needed.
• Cuba closed the Mariel
Harbor when an mutual
agreement was met
between the two
governments in October
1980.
effect on United States
• There was an seven percent
increase in the Miami labor
market.
• The unemployment rate went
from 5.0 to 7.1 because of so
many new Cuban workers.
• The overall economy of the
United States suffered, but
not a whole lot.
• There was a rise in the
Cuban population.
