Blessed are the heavens, for they declare the power of creation
Blessed is the earth, our beloved home, for she is a planet of plentitude.
Blessed are the waters, for they gave rise to living things.
Blessed is the land, for it is the source of life abundant.
Blessed is the air we breathe, for it fires us to life and love.
Blessed are the beasts of the field, for they are glorious to behold.
Blessed are the birds of the air, for they carve a graceful arc in the sky.

Blessed are the fields of grain, the orchards of fruit, for they give
sustenance, asking nothing in return.
Blessed are those who dwell on Earth, for they cherish the privilege of
living upon it.
Blessed are they that mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are they that rejoice, for their joy is a blessing to all life.
Blessed are they who protect the Earth and all her creatures, for their
reward shall be harmony with the web of existence.
Rejoice, and be glad, for the earth and her people are one.

For the sake of those facing rising temperatures, drought and water
shortages,
Creator God, in your mercy, renew this damaged world.
For the sake of those facing unpredictable weather, disrupted seasons, and
failed crops,
Creator God, in your mercy, renew this damaged world.
For the sake of those facing flooding, land loss, and salination of vital
water supplies
Creator God, in your mercy, renew this damaged world.

For the sake of the poor, the vulnerable, and the refugee
Creator God, in your mercy renew this damaged world
For the sake of us all,
Creator God, in your mercy recreate our hearts that we might partner with
you to renew this damaged world,
We ask you, Creator God to inspire our world leaders to take concrete
action on behalf of the sustainability of Planet Earth and her community
of life
Give them the courage and resolve to secure a future for our planet and
all species that call Earth “HOME.”

“An important biological species is in danger of disappearing due to the fast and progressive
destruction of its natural living conditions: mankind. We have now become aware of this
problem when it is almost too late to stop it. It is necessary to point out that consumer
societies are fundamentally responsible for the brutal destruction of the environment. They
arose from the old colonial powers and from imperialist policies which in turn engendered
the backwardness and poverty which today afflicts the vast majority of mankind. With only 20
percent of the world’s population, these societies consume two-thirds of the metals and threefourths of the energy produced in the world. They have poisoned the seas and rivers,
polluted the air, weakened and punctured the ozone layer, saturated the atmosphere with
gases which are changing weather conditions with a catastrophic effect we are already
beginning to experience.
Tomorrow it will be too late to do what we
should have done a long time ago.”

PROPOSAL UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF
MOTHER EARTH
▪ Article 1. Mother Earth
(1) Mother Earth is a living being.
(2) Mother Earth is a unique, indivisible, self-regulating community of
interrelated beings that sustains, contains and reproduces all beings.
(3) Each being is defined by its relationships as an integral part of Mother Earth.
▪ Article 2. Inherent Rights of Mother Earth
(1) Mother Earth and all beings of which she is composed have the following
inherent rights:
(a) the right to life and to exist;
(b) the right to be respected;
(c) the right to regenerate its bio-capacity and to continue its vital cycles and
processes free from human disruptions;

INTERNATIONAL MOTHER EARTH DAY
International Mother Earth Day was established in 2009 by the General Assembly
under Resolution A/RES/63/278. The Resolution was introduced by The Plurinational
State of Bolivia and endorsed by over 50 member states.[1] It recognizes that "the
Earth and its ecosystems are our home" and that "it is necessary to promote harmony
with nature and the Earth." The term Mother Earth is used because it "reflects the
interdependence that exists among human beings, other living species and the planet
we all inhabit". It is decided to designate April 22 as International Mother Earth
Day.[2]
General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto Brockmann welcomed the creation of
International Mother Earth Day, saying: "International Mother Earth Day promotes a
view of the Earth as the entity that sustains all living things found in nature.
Inclusiveness is at the heart of International Mother Earth Day; fostering shared
responsibilities to rebuild our troubled relationship with nature is a cause that is
uniting people around the world."[3]

Prayer
Dear St. Francis,
Remind us of the power of everyday acts of kindness, love, and caring.
Just as you rebuilt God’s Church with your example, help us to do the
same.
Inspire us with new energy in our hearts, new ways in our thoughts,
new actions in our lives, and new unity to work together.
Lead us on the paths to act now so we can pass on to our children and
our children’s children and their children a livable, abundant, fertile,
and still beautiful planet on which to live.
Through Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.
