The first preliminary activity was launched on 10 October 2013. It was a part of lecture by Dr. Rafee, and Dr. Ariva (Faculty of built environment, UTM) coordinated by Dr. Irina. A new technical approach has introduced by Dr. Akira Kikuchi (IPASA, Water Research alliance/ FKA) for the purpose. The activity went very well with a very good participation and cooperation from all of the students. Thanks to Dr Rafee and Dr. Ariva. All of the students could easily applied the water sampling and testing using Dr. Akira's testing kits. Students could immediately interpret the results obtained based on the guideline provided. The initiatives is part of the Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) project of Low Carbon Cities Framework (LCCF) - Malaysian Green Technology (MGTC), Faculty of Built Environment (FBE) and IPASA (Institut Pengurusan Alam Sekitar dan Sumber Air). The students participation for the first activity was from the Environmental Studies Course and Environmental Planning of FBE. The effort was part of the comprehensive 'teaching-research-operation' approach used as part of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). UNESCO is the lead agency for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).
