THE COMPANY
• RIO TINTO are found over 40 countries across six continents. They are
strongly represented in Australia and North America.
• RIO TINTO makes modern life work. They supply the metals and
minerals that help the world to grow. Some of RIO TINTO’S major
products are aluminium, copper, diamonds, gold, industrial minerals
and more. (I will be focusing on aluminium on the next slide)
• RIO TINTO is mined because it processes the Earth’s mineral resources
and has the capability and resources to supply a world hungry for the
metals and minerals that are used in everyday life, in diverse products
such as mobile phones and cars.
• Some types of mining techniques used to obtain these products are
Autonomy, Recovery and Tunnelling. (see glossary for meanings)

ALUMINIUM
Aluminium is a silvery-white, tough, but lightweight metal. It is a good conductor
of electricity and is very resistant to atmospheric corrosion. This product is mainly
mined in three stages.
The first step is to remove the aluminium from the Earth in mining.
Next, the aluminium has to be purified using the Bayer process.
After it has been purified, the aluminium is then mixed with cyrolite and then
heated to about 980 degrees Celsius to melt the solid.
This process may seem very simple but it is actually very time consuming. It also
requires so much electricity that the aluminium is quite expensive.
A diagram on the
procedure
WHY IS ALUMINIUM MINED?
• Aluminium is very important because without it we wouldn’t be
able to have the latest transportation. It is used for auto parts,
motorcycles and airplane parts.
• Aluminium is also used for building and construction, packing
such as aluminium foil trays , gum and candy wrappers.
THE ENVIRONMENT
• Rio Tinto is well aware and respectful for the environment.
They are committed to minimising their impact on the planet
and getting advice from environmental experts. Rio Tinto has
developed a range of practical environmental programmes,
from using technological expertise to reduce emissions, to
recycling water and rehabilitating land into wildlife habitats.
• However, pollution is produced into the atmosphere because
Rio Tinto releases gases and it particulates in outer space. To
manage or try to avoid this Rio Tinto constantly review their
emissions and look for ways to improve their performance and
apply controls.
CONCLUSION
I feel that the subject of mining is a very decent idea
and should continue, even though it has a large effect
on the environment. Mining minerals gets us the
attraction on resources and metals but also keeps the
industry alive. I like how Rio Tinto has the urge to make
a change to the environment and make it a healthier
place.
