Between 2000 and 2050, the proportion of the world's population over 60 years will double from about 11% to 22%. The absolute number of people aged 60 years and over is expected to increase from 605 million to 2 billion over the same period’. (World Health Organisation 2012) Programme Philosophy The programme philosophy stems from the beliefs that ageing is a positive life event and that older people benefit when communities and older people services are designed to be age-friendly. Older people are affected in many ways by how and where they live. Their ability to participate in the social, economic and cultural life of a community or residential care setting and their physical and psychological health and well being are determined by the environment in which they live.
