Welcome The Protac Ball Blanket - from theory to praxis and research By Martin Fog, Physiotherapist, sales rep. Stand D90d, the Danish Pavilion I sense, therefore I am….. History • • • How did it all start? Proprioceptive sense and the tactile sense PROTAC Sensory Stimulation/Integration Different sensory systems, 7 all together • • • • • • • Proprioceptive system (muscle and joint movement) Tactile system (touch) Vestibular system (balance, speed, movement) Sight (vision, where am I) Sound (registrering noices) Smell Taste • 7 senses you can stimulate to get a response……… 3 levels within the way of sensing by a Canadian Occupational therapist, Amy MacDonald • Sensory entertainment (sensory bombardment) • Sensory stimulation (generel stimulation of the senses) • Sensory integration (Specific sensory training to either defect or low functional senses) Proprioceptive system • Proprio means ”yourself” and proprioception is the bodys recognition of it self. • The Pro-prioceptive sense has cells in muscle and joints and reacts to differences in pushing and pulling on muscles and joints. • The sense has a major role in bodyconciousness, coordination of movements and activities of daily living, both known and unknown activities. • The sense has an organizing effect on the flow of sensory impressions/impulses – it is calming. • Therefore an incredibly important sense according to childrens development both physically and mentally. • If the proprioceptive system is defect in any way, then you have a tendency to compensate with your vision. Tactile system • The sense of touch, means a great deal to the way you handle your surroundings both physically and mentallysurvival and experience • A: the upper superficial system- the protective systemthe fight- fright- flight reactions (the increased Adrenalin production… READY..) • B: The deeper tactile system, the discriminitive system, splits the sensory impressions from each other, recognize them, cooperates with the muscle and joint system (proprioceptive system) to increase the body conciousness. -Deep pressure. • Good to remember when you work with people The Protac Ball Blanket Protac Ball Blanket with plastic balls • Adult Ball Blanket (7kg/16lbs.) • Junior size (3,5kg/8lbs.) • Flame-retardent fabric • Filled with plastic balls • Used to sleep with or use during the day Effect of the Protac Ball Blanket • The weight of the plastic balls apply point pressure on to the body. That affects the senses, so you sense the borders of your body better • The sensory stimulation gives inhibitory impulses to CNS, ”The organizer” helps you to calm down/sense yourself • That is why the Ball Blanket is calming, provides a feeling of safety and helps create the borders of your body, so you increase your body conciousness • Oxytocine, anti stress hormone. Lower bloodpressure, activates the calm/ease system (opponent to the adrenalin system) To whom? Typically you would use it for: • Children: autism, ADHD, CP, tourette syndrome, SI/SPD problems, premature children, adopted children etc. • Psychiatry: ADHD, anxiety, selfdestructive behaviour, eating disorders, borderline, skizofrenic, depression etc. • Neurology: apoplexia, epilepsia, multible sclerosis, spasticity, pain, hypermobile etc. • Learning disabilities • Stress • Sleeping disorders • All together, for people who has a hard time finding rest, either physically or mentally, both children and adults Introduction to the Protac Ball Blanket • It is best to introduce the Ball Blanket on a good day • Try to exclude other sensory stimulations, you, the colours in the room, the light etc. • Be aware of the way you introduce it, and the surroundings for it • Give it time to show effect Video Scientific research • • • • MA- project, senile dementia MA- project, children with SI/SPD problems Scientific research, patients with chronic pain Scientific research, childen with ADHD/ADHS MA- project, Senile dementia • • • • • • • • Body language and face expression shows satisfaction Patient asks for the Ball Blanket Gives a sound (positive) when using the Ball Blanket Sleeps better at night Breathes more quietly Stops yelling Stops beating at stuff Better sense of direction - If you want further information or retreat the paper, please contact: info@gunaremyr.se MA-project Children summary • • • An interventional study of effect from use of Ball Blankets by 37, 2- 12 year old children with disturbances in the area of sensory integration The children had at least 2 of the following 6 problems: Sleeping difficulties • Concentration problems • Physical restlessnes • Attention difficulties • Mood problems • Overreacting sensory system • MA-project Children summary •The Children were split up into 6 diagnosis groups ADHD, activity disturbed • Cerebral Palsy • Psychiatry • Psychomotor functional retarded • Consequences of being born to early • No diagnosis group • MA-project Children Conclusion • Best effect on sleeping difficulties 64% • Around 40% has effect on Mood and overreacting sensory system • Around 33% has effect om concentration problems and physical restlessnes • Around 20% has effect om Attention difficulties • Children with moderate problems is gaining more effect of the Ball Blanket, than children with multiple problems. read more: http://www.protac.eu/Documentation.aspx?ID=112 Patients with pain •r Children with ADHD • • • • Started i 2008 Ended july 2009 Waiting for the article/project to get published Really good results on the project Protac SenSit • A sense stimulating chair • Sensory stimulation through the plastic balls • Wrap yourself into the chair • Create your own ”space” • Allow yourself to relax • Shapes after you body • A lot of good experiences and case stories from real life • Allow you to relax even though there are people around you • An active as well as relaxing chair Protac Ball Cushion Protac Ball Cushion • Dynamic sitting posture • Gives stimulus to straighten your back, by influencing the abdominal and spine muscles when you move out of the centre of gravity • Balance training • Increases the time of concentration • By sitting on the plastic balls, you sense yourself better, you can feel that your a… is planted on the seat Product demonstration Visit us at the Danish Pavilion stand D90d The theory of using the ballcushion • Dynamic sitting posture Gives stimulus to straighten your back, by influencing the abdominal and spine muscles when you move out of theThe theory of using the ballcushion • • • • • Dynamic sitting posture Gives stimulus to straighten your back, by influencing the abdominal and spine muscles when you move out of the centre of gravity Balancetraining Increases the time for concentration By sitting on the plastic balls, you sense yourself better, you can feel that your a….
