Arts Award and Summer Reading Challenge
Did you know you can use the House and the Mouse activity book for Arts Award Discover?
’Arts Award Discover was a great fit with what we were already
delivering and contributed to our library strategy. The staff and
children really enjoyed the project and feedback from the parents
has been really positive. It was a really good way of bringing
children of different ages and schools together to have fun and
learn. One group of children even met outside of the library and
visited the cinema together as part of the award.’
Ruth Gedalovitch, Reader Development Manager for Havering Libraries

 We hope that you will want to use the House and the Mouse activity book to
deliver Arts Award Discover! However, you are not required to run Arts Award in
order to use the activity book
 You can take a look inside the activity book here: The House and the Mouse
 Even if you don’t run Arts Award Discover with the House and the Mouse activity
book, it will show you how easy it is to incorporate Arts Award into existing
projects
 The Bridge organisations are actively encouraging libraries to engage with Arts
Award and may be able to help you to do so
Delivering Arts Award
 You will need to have a member of staff or a volunteer with experience of working
with children trained as an Arts Award Discover and Explore adviser
 Register your library service as an Arts Award centre. This is free and advisers can
work across your library sites
 You can work in collaboration with an existing Arts Award centre* to deliver Arts
Award
* Find local centres on the map at www.artsaward.org.uk/centres

As a Supporter your library might offer:
 workshops
 arts, literary and cultural events which they can review
 opportunities to find out about artists and cultural opportunities
 a chance to share skills, lead arts projects or show their work at the library

Support
 Trinity College manages Arts Award on behalf of the Arts Council England. The Arts
Award website tells you about the different levels, how to deliver it, what children
and young people get out of it, and provides resources and case studies –
www.artsaward.org.uk
 The Arts Award Guide has information and costs www.artsaward.org.uk/guide
 The Arts Council funded Bridge organisations are actively engaging with the library
sector to encourage more library services to train staff as advisers and deliver Arts

Bridge Organisations
A goal of Arts Council England’s mission, ‘achieving great art for everyone’, is to
make sure that every child and young person has the opportunity to experience
the richness of the arts and culture. To help achieve this, ACE has funded a
network of 10 ‘Bridge’ organisations.
They use their experience and expertise to connect children and young people,
schools, communities, libraries and museums with art and culture.
What Bridges can to do support your library
 Each regional Bridge organisation has an officer with responsibilities for engaging
with libraries
 Many offer training advice on Arts Award and may be able to help library
staff/volunteers access Arts Award Adviser training
 The Bridges have excellent information on the arts and cultural offers and
organsations within their region
 They offer an excellent opportunity for library services to engage with other arts
and cultural organisations
 For more information contact your regional Bridge
