• The French controlled the
colony known as
Indochina, which includes
the countries of Cambodia,
Laos, and Vietnam.

Japanese moved in and
controlled this region as
well as much of the rest
of Southeast Asia.

• Once the Japanese were
defeated, the French
regained control; however, a
nationalist movement led by
Communist Vietnamese
leader, Ho Chi Minh, had
already begun.

• Ho Chi Minh declared
independence for Vietnam
and war followed. Under Ho
Chi Minh’s leadership,
Communist fighters finally
defeated the French in 1954.

• In summary, the Vietnamese had to
fight the French for independence.
However, a civil war then broke out
between northern and southern
Vietnam as to what type of
government would rule the
country… Communism or
Democracy
