I wonder, when he comes again, will herald angels sing? Will earth be white with drifted snow, or will the world know spring? I wonder if one star will shine far brighter than the rest; Will daylight stay the whole night through? Will songbirds leave their nests? I’m sure he’ll call his little ones together ’round his knee, Because he said in days gone by, “Suffer them to come to me.” I wonder, when he comes again, will I be ready there To look upon his loving face and join with him in prayer? Each day I’ll try to do his will and let my light so shine That others seeing me may seek for greater light divine. Then, when that blessed day is here, he’ll love me and he’ll say, “You’ve served me well, my little child; come unto my arms to stay.” Enr. What do we do to prepare for school? for a meal? for family home evening? • In this lesson we are going to learn how we can prepare spiritually for a wonderful event that will happen in the future. • “Lesson 25: Parable of the Ten Virgins,” Primary 7: New Testament, 83 • • This parable compares the second coming of Jesus Christ to a wedding. The second coming is when the Savior will return to earth to rule during the Millennium. • • • The parable of the ten virgins is based on ancient Jewish wedding customs. The bridegroom and his friends escorted the bride from her home to the home of the bridegroom. Along the way friends of the bride waited to join them. When they arrived at the bridegroom’s home, they all went inside for the wedding. These weddings usually took place in the evenings, so those waiting for the bride and bridegroom carried lamps. • • • • • Jesus told a story about ten young women who went to a wedding. They waited for the bridegroom to come and let them in. They did not know what time he would come. • • • The ten women had oil-burning lamps. Five of the women were wise. They had extra oil with them. The other five women were foolish. They only had the oil that was in their lamps. The bridegroom did not come for a long time. • The oil in the lamps ran out. • The five wise women had more oil to put in their lamps. • The five foolish women had to go buy more oil. • • • While they were gone, the bridegroom came. He let the five wise women into the wedding. • When the five foolish women returned, the door was closed. • They could not go to the wedding. • • • • Jesus is like the bridegroom in this story. Church members are like the ten women. When Jesus comes again, some members will be ready. They will have obeyed God’s commandments. • Others will not be ready. • They will not be able to be with the Savior when He comes again. Whom do the ten virgins represent? • Let’s read Matthew 25:1 • • Whom does the bridegroom represent? How do we know that all ten virgins believed in Jesus Christ? • Let’s read Matthew 25:6–7 • They “went out to meet” the bridegroom and waited for him. • How can we show that we believe in Jesus? • • Why were five of the virgins referred to as foolish? • Let’s read Matthew 25:3 • Why were five referred to as wise? • Let’s read Matthew 25:4 • • • What happened when the bridegroom came? • Let’s read Matthew 25:6–8 Why do you think the five foolish virgins were so unprepared? How do you think we can be prepared when Jesus comes again? • Why do you think the five wise virgins did not share their oil? Let’s read Matthew 25:9 Why couldn’t they have given some of their oil to the others? • • • The shape of Jewish lamps, outside lips rounded inward, made it almost impossible for someone to pour oil from one lamp to another. • • In the parable, the oil in the wise virgins’ lamps represents their righteous living and obedience. We each fill our own lamp, which represents our own life, with our obedience and righteousness. • Heavenly Father’s blessings to us for our righteous actions cannot be given to the disobedient. What happened to the five who were not prepared? • Let’s read Matthew 25:10–12 • What happened to the five who were prepared? • • When Jesus left His Apostles in Jerusalem, angels told them He would come a second time. Let’s read Acts 1:9–11 • Enr. Act. 1 • Only Heavenly Father knows when the Second Coming will be. • Let’s read Matthew 24:36 Enr. Act. 1 Jesus will come in power and glory and reign on the earth for a thousand years. Let’s read D&C 29:11 • • Enr. Act. 1 • • We need to prepare ourselves for Christ’s second coming. Let’s read D&C 33:17–18 Enr. Act. 1 • • The righteous who are ready for Jesus’ second coming will be with Him on that great day. They will dwell in the presence of Heavenly Father and Jesus forever. • Let’s read D&C 76:62–63 Enr. Act. 1 • Why is it important for us to prepare now for the Second Coming? • How can we fill our lamps with oil? • • • Elder Bruce R. McConkie said: “As individuals, we prepare to meet our God by keeping His commandments and living His laws… “The gospel in its everlasting fullness, restored as it has been in these last days, is here to prepare a people for the second coming of the Son of Man” (The Millennial Messiah, p. 572). • Let’s read Matthew 24:36 and Matthew 25:13 • Just as the ten virgins did not know the exact hour when the bridegroom would come, we do not know exactly when Jesus will come again. • What will it be like when Jesus Christ returns? • Let’s read D&C 45:56–57 & 63:53–54 • What blessings are in store for those who are spiritually prepared? • Let’s read D&C 38:30 I have a lamp for each of you. • Write things on your lamp that will fill your spiritual lamp with oil. • • These are things you each have to get or do yourself in order to have oil in your lamps, as the five wise virgins did. Enr. Act. 2 • • • President Spencer W. Kimball’s said: “In our lives the oil of preparedness is accumulated drop by drop in righteous living. “Attendance at sacrament meetings adds oil to our lamps, drop by drop over the years. Enr. Act. 2 • • “Fasting, family prayer, home teaching, control of bodily appetites, preaching the gospel, studying the scriptures… “Each act of dedication and obedience is a drop added to our store. Enr. Act. 2 • • “Deeds of kindness, payment of offerings and tithes, chaste thoughts and actions, marriage in the covenant for eternity… “These, too, contribute importantly to the oil with which we can at midnight refuel our exhausted lamps” (Faith Precedes the Miracle, p. 256). Enr. Act. 2 • • President Spencer W. Kimball said: “The ten virgins belonged to the kingdom and had every right to the blessings—except that five were not valiant and were not ready when the great day came. Enr. Act. 3 “They were unprepared through not living all the commandments. “They were bitterly disappointed at being shut out from the marriage— as likewise their modern counterparts [members today who are not prepared] will be” • • (The Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 8). Enr. Act. 3 • I bear my testimony of the importance of preparing for the second coming of Jesus Christ by living righteously. • It is important to be worthy so we can participate in that great event. • • • • The hymn, lesson and scripture story are from lds.org.
