• He read General Order Number 3 to the
people of Galveston
• Galveston was one of the last places in the
United States that still had not freed its
slaves

on January 1, 1863
• General Lee surrended to General Grant at
Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865
• President Lincoln was assassinated on
April 15, 1865
• General Granger arrives in Galveston on
June 19, 1865
