Bastet the goddess of cats

advertisement
Bastet the goddess of cats was the protector of Ra ( Re
). Ra sent Bastet into a tomb to fight the god of chaos
for eternity. The god of chaos was a snake and was
named Apophis. Bast was a goddess of the sun
throughout most of Ancient Egyptian history, but later
when she was changed into a cat goddess rather than a
lioness, she was changed to a goddess of the moon by
Greeks occupying Ancient Egyptian toward the end of
its civilization. ( in Greek mythology, Bast also is
known as Ailuros.

How was Bast born if she had no
mother?
This might be a little different to you but Bast was
formed not born. She was said to have been created by
Ra’s developing sperm in the ocean…
Beastly Bastet
Bastet is the Ancient Egyptian cat goddess of
war, strategy, fertility, cats ( of course ), child
rearing, and protection. Bastet is beast because
Ra sent her into a magical obelisk to fight a
gigantic snake for eternity. This snake was the
main god of chaos. This giant snake was called
Apophis. When Bastet went into war she would
turn into – human body with LION head –
Bast’s sister Sekhmet
Sekhmet is one of the oldest known Egyptian
deities. She is depicted as a lion-headed woman,
sometimes with the addition of a sun disc on her
head. Sekhmet’s main cult centre was in Memphis
( Men Nefer) where she was worshipped as “the
destroyer” alongside her consort Ptah ( the creator
) and Nefertum ( the healer )
Bastet fight with Apophis
1. In the bottom right picture
• Bastet is fighting Apophis – that is incorrect because
she would not be in her cat form she would be in her
war form ( human body lion head )
• (On the bottom left and middle picture Ra is on his
night journey through the underworld ( Ra took this
trip in the underworld while the moon was up ) While
Ra was riding in this boat Bastet and some other
gods protected him from the evil snake Apophis from
rising into humanity and some other evil creatures
lurking in the underworld.
Cat fight
Bastet was a well trained fighter because she was a cat. You
might think cats are not good at fights. Cats are very cunning as well.
cats are not good in fights but actually cats have long claws. So if you
were a goddess that head cat-like superpowers, a human body, and
long claws well lets just say WALK AWAY! Although she was a
competitive fighter Apophis had some tricks up his sleeve as well.
Apophis was a giant snake that was the god of chaos. Apophis had
some demons and minor gods of chaos at his side ( like Seth ). Apophis
was a large golden snake known to be miles long. He was so larger
every day he attempted to swallow the sun also known as Ra. That is
why Ra sent Bastet to fight him for eternity. One of Apophis’ many
tricks was that Apophis would try to hypnotize Ra. Egyptians thought
that because Apophis could not attack while the sun was up they
thought he must lie just below the horizon. They also though he would
jump up just when the sun was rising and setting.
