LO: We will understand what
the term ‘counterurbanisation’
means.
Counterurbanisation is two types of
movements…
1. People and activities from large cities
to smaller cities and towns.
2. People move from towns and cities to
rural areas.
We are concerned with the second one.
Why do people move?
• People become discontented with the
way of life in larger cities.
• Unhappy with:
• Cost of housing
• Pollution
• Personal safety
• General quality of life
• For rural areas, the impact of
counterurbanisation is the opposite to
depopulation because population is
increased
• If the number of people moving into the
countryside as a result of
counterurbanisation is greater than the
number of people living, then this
results in a population increase
The Isle of Skye is an exception
Isle of Skye
Why Skye is attracting people
• Population is 9,000
• Skye lies much close to the mainland than the other
islands.
• In 1995, a bridge was opened which gave Skye a
direct link to the mainland for the first time.
• It already has two good ferry links.
• The removal of tolls on the bridge in 2004 boosted
incomers.
• Skye was an agricultural island but now tourism is the
main industry
• There is also fishing, forestry and distilling.
• There are 3 main types of
incomers
• People involved in tourism, e.g.
hotel staff or setting up their
own B&B
• People moving to the island to
retire
• People taking advantage of
modern ICT and
‘telecottaging’ (working from
home in the country using
computer technology to
communicate)
Are the new comers welcome?
• The incomers are good news for the
island.
• However, some islanders think that the
incomers are taking their housing and
jobs.
