Controversy and Criticism
THE VIETNAM WAR: A PICTORIAL HISTORY
The Vietnam War: Some context
 Up until the so-called Global War on Terrorism began
after the 9/11 attacks in late 2001 the Vietnam War was
considered the most controversial military action in
U.S. history.
 Because many Americans so no direct threat to the
U.S. by the Communists in North Vietnam this military
conflict was considered very controversial.
 Because the U.S. already had experience with two “Red
Scares” (1920s and 1950s) the nation was well aware of
the threat of communism.
 Over 58,000 U.S. military personnel eventually died
fighting in the Vietnam War. Four U.S. presidents
acted as Commander-in-Chief during this “war.”
