The essay is graded holistically (a fancy way of saying that the essay is graded as a whole instead of a collection of criteria). There is a time limit of 25 minutes. ACT: The essay is optional., but again, most colleges and universities would like you to take it. If you decide to do the essay, you’ll find it at the end of the exam. The ACT essay is graded according to a strict rubric (a fancy way of saying that certain criteria must be met to earn a given score). There is a time limit of 30 minutes. Examples of SAT and ACT Writing Prompts: ACT: In your view, should high schools become more tolerant of cheating? SAT: What is your view of the claim that something unsuccessful still can have some value? Both require that you handwrite the essay. Also, both the SAT and the ACT essays are scored similarly. Two graders will read your essay and each assign it a score of 1-6. These scores are then added together to produce a final score of 2-12. NEED MORE INFORMATION?
