Welcome to Relay Recess Your students can be superheroes against cancer! What does the American Cancer Society do? Help people stay well by helping them take steps to prevent cancer or detect it early, when it’s most treatable. Help people get well by being in their corner around the clock to guide them through every step of their cancer experience. Find cures by funding groundbreaking research that helps us understand cancer’s causes, determine how best to prevent it, and discover new ways to cure it. Fight back by working with lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. When large groups of people come together for the benefit of others, we call that community service. We are proud of our students at Badger, proud of our parents, and grateful that these great kids are generous citizens of this community.” - Ted Neitzke, Principal Badger Middle School, WI Tailored to Fit Your School Relay Recess can be set up to best fit the school The school determines the number of days to hold the activities, and the number of hours for the event. They can be held at: • Football or Practice Fields • Gyms • Playgrounds • Classrooms Fundraisers • Ongoing (a month or week) or just the day of the event • Classes are “teams” and raise money together and/or individuals can raise funds themselves • There are MANY ways to fundraise! Sample Fundraising Ideas Penny Wars - Which classroom and students can bring in the most change? Quizmaster - Teachers are asked questions about cancer during a school assembly and get slimed or pied if they answer incorrectly. There could be admission to the event, or the teachers could also donate a dollar for every question they get wrong. Read-a-thon - Students commit to asking teachers, family, and friends to sponsor them on a per-book basis or with a flat donation for the books they read during a designated time period. Links For Hope - Have students buy a paper link for $1 and then put their name on it. Hang the chain link in the hallway. The colors of the links can also correspond with the awareness colors of different cancers.
