Limestone is a rock found in the Lower Peninsula.
Limestone is made of shells and sand.

Lumber is used to build…. Houses and buildings
Lumbering is…. Cutting down trees.
Lumbering was such a big industry in mid-Michigan,
Many immigrants came to Michigan.
An immigrant is.. A person who moves from one
country to work in another country.
Many immigrants moved to cities like Saginaw, Muskegon
and Bay City to work in sawmills.
Rivers were important to early lumbering because….
* Logs float.
* The logs could float to saw mills
* Saw mills were built along river banks
Michigan trees did not last as long as people
thought they would because…….
people invented things to cut and
move the lumber faster.
People invented:
•new saws that cut wood faster
•“Big Wheels”, so logs could be moved in the summer
or winter (rivers did not move logs in the winter
because they froze partially)
Lumber was a big industry in Michigan. Lumber companies
Cut down too many trees, without thinking about it.
One of the few places in Michigan that still has
original pine trees, which are very tall, is……..
