Our Appearance A Look At Poetry Our Appearance… Our appearance, Our words, Our actions Are never greater Than ourselves. For the soul Is our house; Our eyes it’s windows; And our words Its messengers. Summary In this poem, the author is expressing herself through feelings. Her point is that what is inside of a person is more important that what is on the outside. She is saying that our soul is what we are and we should be critiqued based on what is on the inside and not what is on the outside like our looks. Critique There is a metaphor halfway through this poem: for the soul is our house that I think really adds to the poem. It is one of the main points in the whole poem in fact. There could be maybe some more metaphors or similes in this poem but it is quite short so there isn’t a lot of room. I really liked this poem because it has such a deep meaning. I really agree with meaning of the poem and it has an impact on you even when it is expressed in these short words. Questions 1.) what do you think the main point the author is trying to make is? 2.) what significance does the title have? 3.) what is a metaphor in the poem? 4.) do you agree with the author? 5.) what is the mood of this poem?
