The Anglo-Saxon Shield
• The Anglo-Saxons needed their shields to protect
them in battle
• But they also liked to decorate
them with objects,
shapes and colours.
• Their shields were meant
to frighten their enemies
and show how powerful they
were.

Make your own Shield
• First draw out a large circle. Then draw a small circle
in the middle. This is called a shield boss.
• Then you can decorate your shield with gold and
silver objects like those in the Staffordshire Hoard?
• When you have finished it is time to cut your shield
out
• On the back of your shield can you write what you
have learnt about the Staffordshire Hoard
