 H.SS 2.2.2
 Label from memory a simple map of the North
American continent, including the countries of
Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Also, label
the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic Ocean.
Objective
 Students will label the following places on a map of
the North American continent. They are Canada,
Mexico, United States, Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic
Ocean.
Big Idea
 A map has many features such as title, map legend,
compass rose, scale, and date. These features help us
read maps.
 A map of the North American continent can include
countries, oceans, lakes, rivers, and mountain
ranges.
Prior Knowledge
 Ask students if they have ever been on a car trip
where the driver used a map to find where they were
going
 Ask about other times they used a map to find where
they were going
Key Vocabulary
 A title is a name given to something.
 A continent is one of the seven main parts of land on
earth.
 A compass rose shows directions on a map.
 A map legend tells what the symbols on a map.
 A scale tells what a small distance on a map equals in
miles and kilometers.

 Students will label the following on a simple map of
the North American continent: Canada, Mexico,
United States, Pacific Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean.
