CONFEDERATE VICTORY
Battle of Gettysburg
• Late June, 1863 Lee heads north to Pennsylvania to get
more supplies. He knows that one big win in the north
could end the war.
• It turns out to be his last advance into the north- the
turning point of the war…
• July 1st: Troops (both sides) showed up and headed to
the hills…stretching 4 miles. General Meade is in
command of the Union. Cemetery Ridge was in the
middle of the Northern line and Seminary Ridge was in
the middle of the Southern line…between the two was a
large field, several hundred yards long.
• July 2nd: Longstreet didn’t get going till 4:00 p.m.
giving Meade time for reinforcements. South tried taking
the hill but were forced to retreat.
Battle of Gettysburg
(Cont.)
• July 3rd: It started with an artillery barrage by both
sides. Then 15,000 Confederate troops (mile long, 3
rows) moved towards Cemetery Ridge…Pickett’s
Charge! Only a few hundred made it to the line. It
was all over in 30 minutes with a Confederate retreat
back to their hill.
• This was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War…Union
(23,000) and the Confederates (28,000).
• The Confederates made their retreat back to Virginia
the very next day.
