Jesus Christ Was Tempted by Satan

1. Keep the commandments; keep the commandments!
In this there is safety; in this there is peace.
He will send blessings; He will send blessings.
Words of a prophet: Keep the commandments.
In this there is safety and peace.
2. We are His children; we are His children,
and we must be tested to show we are true.
Hold to His promises; Hold to His promises,
Heeding the prophets: Keep the commandments.
In this there is safety and peace.

Enr Act 7
“Lesson 7: Jesus Christ Was Tempted by Satan,”
Primary 7: New Testament, 21
 Write
down three things
you think children your age
might be tempted to do
that are wrong.
 What
did you write
down?
 This
lesson will help us learn
how to resist such
temptations.
 Jesus
went into
the wilderness
to be with God.
 The Savior
talked with
Heavenly
Father.
 He did not eat anything for 40
days because He was fasting.
 The
devil came and tempted
Jesus to prove that He was the
Son of God.
 First, he told Jesus to change
some rocks into bread.
 Jesus
was hungry, but He
knew that He should use His
power only to help other
people.
 He did not do what the devil
said.
 Next
the Holy Ghost took Jesus
to a high place on the temple.
 The
devil tempted Jesus a second
time, telling Him to jump off the
temple wall.
 The
devil said that if Jesus was
the Son of God, the angels would
not let Him be hurt.
 Jesus
did
not jump.
 He
knew that it would be wrong
to use His sacred powers in this
way.
 Then
the
Holy Ghost
took Jesus to
the top of a
mountain.
 He
showed Jesus all the
kingdoms and treasures of
the world.
 The
devil told Jesus that He
could have all these things if
He would obey him.
 Jesus
said He would only
obey Heavenly Father.
 He told the devil to go away.
 The devil left.
 Angels
came and blessed
Jesus.
 Jesus was ready to begin
His work.
 Why
did Jesus
go into the
wilderness?
 Let’s read
Matthew 4:1,
footnote b
The Joseph Smith Translation (JST)
clarifies the account found in the
King James Version of the Bible.
The JST makes it clear that Jesus
was “led by the Spirit into the
wilderness to be with God” and
not to be tempted by the devil.
Jesus did not willingly go into a
situation where he would be
tempted, and he doesn’t want us
to do so either.
 In
the Joseph Smith Translation
of Matthew 4:2 it says that while
Jesus was in the wilderness, he
“communed with God.”
 What
do you think it
means to commune
with God?
 How can you
commune with God?
 How
do you
think the forty
days of fasting
and communing
with God
helped prepare
Jesus to
withstand
temptation?
 How
did Satan first tempt
Jesus?
 Let’s read Matthew 4:3
 Why
do you think
this temptation
might have been
hard for him to
withstand?
 Let’s read Matthew 4:2
 How
did
Jesus
answer
Satan?
 What did
Jesus mean?
 Let’s read
Matthew 4:4
 What
were the other ways
Satan tempted Jesus?
 Let’s read Matthew 4:5–6, 8–9
 How did Jesus
respond to these
temptations?
 Let’s read Matthew
4:7, 10
 Do
you think these were the
only times Christ was
tempted?
 Let’s read Luke
4:13
 “For a season”
would indicate
these weren’t
the only times.
The JST states that Jesus was
taken by the Spirit to the
pinnacle and the high mountain
and not by the devil as it reads
in the Bible.
 How
did studying the
scriptures help Jesus resist the
temptations?
 Let’s
read
Matthew 4:4,
6–7, 10
 What
is Satan
trying to do
to each of us?
 Let’s read 2 Nephi 2:18
 2 Nephi 28:20–22
 D&C 10:27
 How
can Heavenly Father
help you resist temptations?
 What
can
you do right
now that will
help you
avoid future
temptations?
What great promise has the Lord
given us regarding our temptations?
 Let’s read 1 Corinthians 10:13
together:

 There hath no temptation taken you
but such as is common to man: but
God is faithful, who will not suffer
you to be tempted above that ye are
able; but will with the temptation also
make a way to escape, that ye may
be able to bear it.
Decide
1.
Decide to resist
temptation before you
are faced with it.
President Spencer W.
Kimball said:
“Right decisions are
easiest to make when
we make them well in
advance. …
“When I was young, I made up
my mind … that I would never
taste tea, coffee, tobacco, or
liquor. …
“The time to decide on… honesty
is before the store clerk gives you
too much change.
“The time to decide against using
[illegal] drugs is before a friend
you like teases you for being
afraid or [righteous].
“The time to decide that we will
settle for nothing less than an
opportunity to live eternally with
our [Heavenly] Father is now”
(“Decisions: Why It’s Important to Make Some Now,” New Era, Apr. 1971, p. 3).
Pray
 2.
Pray that you can avoid
temptation and that if you
are tempted, you will have
the power and faith to
resist.
 Let’s read Mark 14:38
 Daily
prayer, striving to
avoid any kind of
temptation, and pursuing
worthwhile service and
activities will help us.
Listen to the
Holy Ghost
 3.
Listen to the Holy Ghost.
 After
we are baptized, we
are given the gift of the
Holy Ghost, which can help
us overcome temptation.
 Let’s read D&C 11:12
Decide
 What

you have had when you have
been tempted?
 What did you do to avoid
or resist the temptation?
Decide

Holy Ghost

temptations that were
written on the board at the
beginning of the lesson?
 How could a young person
avoid and resist each one?

Listen to the
Holy Ghost

want to be prepared to
resist and plan how you
can avoid or resist this
temptation.
 This
container has questions
in it that describe
temptations you might face.
 Take one of the questions
out, read it, and answer the
question.
 Then, choose someone else
to select another “What if ”
question from the container.
Enr Act 1
Deciding
what to do in
advance is an
important help in
resisting temptation.
Enr Act 1
Act
out what you would
do to resist temptations.
Enr Act 2
 President
Joseph
Fielding Smith said:
 “Habits are easily
formed. It is just as
easy to form good
habits as it is to form
evil ones”
(New Era, July 1972, p. 23).
 Let’s
Enr Act 4
memorize this quotation!
What
are some
decisions you
have made that
will help you
avoid temptation
in the future?
Enr Act 5
 Let’s
4:4
memorize Matthew
But he answered and
said, It is written, Man
shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word
that proceedeth out of
the mouth of God.
Enr Act 6
I
bear testimony that we have
the power to resist the
temptations that come to us.
 I love Jesus and his example of
resisting Satan’s temptations.
 The time to decide that we
will settle for nothing less
than an opportunity to live
eternally with our Heavenly
Father is now.
