…. NOT THE THEORY
IT’S ACTUALLY HAPPENING
AND IT AFFECTS YOU
2008
LCI developed the Global Membership Team
(GMT) with the purpose to;
• Provide a worldwide, unified structure from top to
bottom for pursuing membership growth.
• Clearly place the responsibility for membership
growth in each constitutional area, giving each more
flexibility to meet their own needs and pursue their
own opportunities.
• Provide a way for best practices and membership
success to be transferred from strong districts to
those who need help.
2009
Constitutional Area leaders are chosen.
8-10 worldwide
PIP Judge Brian Stevenson is our CA Leader
Area Leaders are chosen.
39 worldwide
PID Terry Graham is our Eastern Canada Area
Leader
2010
GMT finally brought together the DG Teams (the
District Governor and the two Vice District
Governors) with the LCI’s senior leadership
into an integrated, worldwide team focusing
on membership development.
2010
The development of the GMT has brought about
the need to revamp and replace MERLOW.
So, why replace MERLOW? ….
2010
• It’s not clear if MERLOW is part of GMT and
that needs to be clarified.
• It’s clear that the DG Teams are responsible
for membership development but they are not
always part of MERLOW. The core
membership duties are assigned to others and
that needs to change.
2010
• Over the last 15 years, MERLOW has evolved to
focus on separate activities and separate
chairman roles. Coordination and accountability
were weakened. A more accountable,
streamlined executive management–style
structure is needed.
2010
• LCI’s important growth and development
programs do not always fit under one of the
MERLOW chairs’ responsibilities. This has
caused confusion on which function was
responsible for specific LCI programs.
2010
• Most importantly, the Leadership function in
MERLOW was sometimes lost in the mix;
sometime relegated to a reactive role, to
assist one of the other MERLOW team
members when they needed training help.
Additionally we lost focus on identifying and
developing new leaders.
2011 – The Plan
• Replace the MERLOW team by the end of the
2010-11 Lions year.
• Expand the Global Membership Team down to
the multiple and district level by creating MD
and District GMT teams.
• Move Leadership into its own parallel
platform by creating a Global Leadership
Team.
The Purpose of GMT….
• Provide a worldwide, unified structure from top
to bottom for pursuing membership growth.
• Clearly place the responsibility for membership
growth in each constitutional area, giving each
more flexibility to meet their own needs and
pursue their own opportunities.
• Provide a way for best practices and membership
success to be transferred from strong districts to
those who need help.
The Purpose of GLT….
• Provide a system and dedicated team,
responsible for identifying and developing
more qualified leaders from the Club level on
up.
• Enable customization of LCI’s leadership
training to better meet local needs.
• Improve and expand use of LCI’s many
leadership training and development
programs
2011 – July
Together, GMT and GLT shall be highly
interdependent teams working in tandem,
interacting continuously and intensively at all
levels.
One can not succeed without the other.

‘How can we improve our membership”
• We don’t want just numbers. We want more
hands to do community service.
