PHOTOSHOP: Week 1 - Overview & Domain 1 Domain 1 Objectives: Setting Project Requirements • Identify the purpose, audience, and audience needs for preparing image(s). • Demonstrate knowledge of standard copyright rules for images and image use. • Demonstrate knowledge of project management tasks and responsibilities. • Communicate with others (such as peers and clients) about design plans. Objective 1.1: Identify the Purpose, Audience, and Audience Needs for Preparing Images • Know your target audience. This will influence the content and style of the project. Ask: • For what type of audience will the final product be directed? • Will the final product be aimed at a specific age group or gender? • Will the final product be geared toward a particular business, customer, or for anyone? • What are the goals of the project? Objective 1.1: Identify the Purpose, Audience, and Audience Needs for Preparing Images • Characteristics that can influence design include: • Internal audience in a company • Age • Geographical location or region • Gender • Ethnicity Objective 1.2: Demonstrate Knowledge of Standard Copyright Rules for Images and Use • Intellectual Property: creations of the mind and may include copyrights, trademarks, patents, industrial design rights, and trade secrets. • Copyright: a category of intellectual property providing protection to the authors of "original works of authorship" including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works (can be both published or unpublished). • Derivative Work: based on one or more existing published works. It can itself be copyrighted IF it is significantly different or added a large amount of new items/information (covers only new/changed content, not the original work). Objective 1.2: Demonstrate Knowledge of Standard Copyright Rules for Images and Use • Fair Use Doctrine: allows copyrighted works to be reproduced for a variety of reasons including news reporting, teaching, parody, and research. Four factors to be considered are: • purpose and character of the use, including if it is commercial or nonprofit • nature of the work (fact vs. fiction, published or not) • amount of the work to be used • the effect of the use upon the potential market for the copyrighted work Objective 1.2: Demonstrate Knowledge of Standard Copyright Rules for Images and Use • • Adding file information and copyright insignias to documents in PSD: • In the shared folder under PSD, open the Civil War file. • Go to File<File Info and explore/populate the fields under the "Description" tab (title, author, description, keywords, copyright). • Save it to your desktop as civil_war_revised.psd and note any changes to the title in the window bar. Note: Adobe wants to make sure you know about the top three citation styles: APA, MLA, and Chicago Objective 1.3: Demonstrate Knowledge of Project Management Tasks and Responsibilities • Determine what the entire project will be, not just what your image needs to look like. • Create a project outline with information such as: what content will be included, layout, dimensions, number of pages/panels, file formats needed, deadlines, color vs. grayscale, paper stock if printed. • Project Scope: All-encompassing information about the project including timelines and job specifications. Objective 1.3: Demonstrate Knowledge of Project Management Tasks and Responsibilities • Mockup: Also called a "comp", this is a prototype or design of the layout. It is presented to the client in electronic format for feedback before designing the final project. • Comps come into play once your outline and project specs have been fully determined and developed. • Different mockups can be presented to offer clients variety or different design angles. Objective 1.3: Demonstrate Knowledge of Project Management Tasks and Responsibilities Planning a project in 5 phases: • Planning and Analysis: identify the elements of the project including goals, target audience, style, and delivery requirements. This stage is considered the most crucial because it creates the framework. Items identified during this phase that the project needs in order to satisfy the requirements are called "deliverables." Objective 1.3: Demonstrate Knowledge of Project Management Tasks and Responsibilities • Scheduling: Due dates for the team need to be established by the project leader. Also, a communication plan needs to be employed (how frequently status meetings are held, in what format, a project status sheet that documents progress). • Building: Start the project and create a sketch or "design comp" to show the client. This should meet the initial needs you identified in stage 1 and should be approved by client before moving forward. It may need to go through revisions and resubmissions before it is approved. Objective 1.3: Demonstrate Knowledge of Project Management Tasks and Responsibilities • Review and Evaluation: Is all information accurate? Were all needs identified in the outline met? Were all last minute change requests accommodated? If yes, then it is time to present to the client. • Implementing and/or Publishing: Once the final project has been approved (usually after several revisions) it is time to publish the final project based on its medium of delivery: print, screen, web, etc. Objective 1.4: Communicate with Others (Peers and Clients) About Design Plans • Your project should have a project manager to oversee the team, stay on budget and meet deadlines. • Possible problems during the design process include: slow client feedback, unclear roles and responsibilities, poor communication from leader or within team, low quality work from teammates, client changes the project dramatically AFTER it has been started. • Scope creep: changes in the requirements of the project as the project is already under construction (usually happens during the later phases, so plan for extra time). Objective 1 Summary Questions 1. Identify three questions you may want to consider when defining a target audience. 2. Explain when you must obtain permission before using copyrighted material in your own project. 3. Identify three phases that might appear in a project plan. 4. Identify five items you might include on an outline when planning your design project. 5. What is the purpose of a mockup or comp? Objective 1 Summary Questions 1. Identify three questions you may want to consider when defining a target audience. Age group? Gender? Geared towards businesses, individuals, everyone? Project goals? 2. Explain when you must obtain permission before using copyrighted material in your own project. Almost always: fair use is so specific, and simply citing does not equal permission. 3. Identify three phases that might appear in a project plan. 1.) Planning & Analysis, 2.) Scheduling, 3.) Building, 4.) Review & Evaluation, 5.) Implementing or Publishing 4. Identify five items you might include on an outline when planning your design project. Content to be included, layout of content, dimensions, # of pages or panels, file formats needed, deadline, color process, paper stock 5. What is the purpose of a mockup or comp? prototype presented to client Objective 1 Summary Questions Intellectual Property does not include which of the following: 6. • Copyrights • Trademarks • Patents • Instructions Under which of the following conditions can you use copyrighted work? 7. • You give free advertising. • You give credit to the copyrighted holder. • You follow fair use laws.
