Brief Expectations of Evolution
Drown Proofing
• Modified Survival Float for 5 min
• Ankles tied and hands free for 5 min
• After first 5 min then switch to HOLDING line
behind their back with ankles free for 5 min.
Hands cannot not let go of rope
• Unsuccessful students will be removed from tank
and receive verbal remediation before their
2nd/3rd attempt. MAX 3 attempts
Mask/Fins/Snorkel
“Ditch and Don Practice”
• In shallow end, sit or kneel for 3 min to allow student to
become comfortable.
• When ready take a breath and submerge to allow the
snorkel to fill with water. Return to surface with face in
water and exhale forcefully to clear snorkel. Repeat as
necessary.
• For Mask, in shallow end submerge with mask and then
allow to fill with water.
• Practice the 2 methods of clearing mask for a minimum
of 3 times
• Use proper hand signals to communicate with instructor
Mask/Fins/Snorkel
“Snorkel Technique”
• Using snorkel and fins only swim the perimeter of the
tank with face continuously in the water.
• Take 1-2 breaths through snorkel submerge and touch
bottom of tank and surface, clear snorkel and repeat.
• Minimum of 3 laps around pool.
• Failure constitutes failure to keep face in water, pinching
the nose, does not touch bottom of tank or excessive time
on water surface. Remediation will be done in swallow
end and allowed 3 attempts.
Mask/Fins/Snorkel
“Mask and Snorkel Technique”
• This is to be successfully done 3 times in the swallow end and 2
times in the deep end (min).
• Drop snorkel and mask not adjoined to the bottom.
• Student give “2” to instructor and retrieve mask and snorkel and
DON and clear mask using ether 2 methods.
• Once Student clears mask student will give “ok” to instructor. If
mask needs continued clearing they point at mask to indicate such
or given a “4” to indicate to surface. Proper surfacing procedures
must apply.
• Once at surface DO NOT let face breach surface and clear snorkel
and breath normally until instructor gives “ok”
Mask/Fins/Snorkel
“Mask and Snorkel Technique”
• Once at surface DO NOT let face breach surface and
clear snorkel and breath normally until Instructor gives
“ok”.
• Proper hand signals will be used through out evoluation.
• Maximum of 3 attempts.
• Failure constitues: Not remaining calm, panic, not giving
proper hand signals, not clearing mask COMPLETELY
prior to leaving bottom, inability to clear snorkel and
breath normally.
Surface Swim with and
without fins.
• Pool/tank if being used will be set up with fastest to
slowest swimmers for first lane to the last.
• Using mask/fins/snorkel students will surface swim to
the other side of the pool (30m) and then take one breath
and swim underwater, along the bottom of the pool back
to the starting wall and ascend using proper methods.
• Proper hand signals will be used through out evoluation.
