Task One
What do you think this poem is about based on the title? Try and come up with more
than one idea.
What do the words make you think of (connotations)?
Must I give up another night
You stupid, stupid git.
Task Two
What do you think this poem is about based on the first and last lines? Try and come
up with more than one idea.
What do the words make you think of (connotations)?
Yes, I’m aware you’re sensitive:
A tortured, wounded soul.
I’m after passion, thrills and fun.
You say fun takes its toll,
So what are we doing here? I fear
We’ve lost our common goal.
Rubbish at Adultery
Must I give up another night
To hear you whinge and whine
About how terribly grim you feel
And what a dreadful swine
You are? You say you’ll never leave
Your wife and children. Fine;
You’re rubbish at adultery.
I think you ought to quit.
When have I ever asked you to?
Trouble is, though, fidelity?
I’d settle for a kiss.
You’re just as crap at it.
Couldn’t you, for an hour or so,
Choose one and do it properly,
Just leave them out of this?
You stupid, stupid git.
A rare ten minutes off from guilty
Diatribes – what bliss.
Task Three
Read the full poem. What do you think the poem is about now? Write a brief summary
of the poem.
Repetition
Repetition is when a word or phrase is repeated several
times.
What’s the effect?
Repetition emphasises a specific word/phrase to make
it stick in the mind of the reader.
Enjambment
Enjambment is the continuation of a sentence or clause
over a line-break.
What’s the effect?
Enjambment has lots of different effects depending on
the poem. It can show anger, hurt, speed or even
excitement. It also makes the verse flow. Watch out –
enjambment can trick you!
Alliteration
Alliteration is when two words next to or close to each
other start with the same letter.
What’s the effect?
Alliterations are catchy – they stick in your mind. They
can emphasise soft sounds like ‘s’ or stress hard sounds
when you’re angry like ‘h’ or ‘d’.
