Simple Machines By Caleb Ogunmola And Kean Farhani Once upon a time there was a man named Billy Bob Joe. He always had trouble doing work. One day he went up to his boss and asked, “ I need something to make my work easier.” The boss answered and said, “Why don’t you use Simple Machines?” “What are Simple Machines?” asked Billy Bob Joe. “Well Billy, Simple Machines are Machines that makes things easier.” “Let me explain to you the different types of Simple Machines.” “One type of Simple Machine is called a lever.” said the boss. “A lever is a strong bar that turns on a fulcrum.” “What is a fulcrum?” asked Billy Bob Joe. “A fulcrum is any support under a lever.” “Levers are used to measure the weights of two things if they are equal or not.” “Examples of levers are your leg, a gate and broom.” “Another Simple Machine is called a pulley.” “A pulley is used to lift weights or things to another place using a belt or a rope.” “A rope fits into a socket allowing it to pull up objects heavy or light like the American flag. “Another Simple Machine is a Wheel and Axle.” “A wheel and axle is a Simple Machine that allows you to turn something or it turns itself around an axle.” “An example of a wheel and axle is a doorknob.” “A doorknob turns around an axle and the knob is the wheel.” “Another simple machine is called a Gear.” “A Gear has teeth like ends that fit into other Gears.” “For example a clock has gears in it to make it tick.” “The ticking is caused by the mini Gears moving at a speed.” “Another Simple Machine is called an Inclined Plane.” “An inclined plane can help push boxes into a truck.” “Inclined planes can also be fan blades which cut into the wind making cold air.” “Another Simple Machine is called a Wedge.” “ A wedge fits between two things and splits them apart.” “An example of a wedge is a knife.” “A knife slices cheese or steak apart by wedging into them.” “The last Simple Machine is a Screw.” “A screw is a Simple Machine that holds things together.” “For example if you take out all of the screws in your toy car then it will fall apart.” “That is all the Simple Machines Billy” “But I have one more thing to tell you.” “This one is called work.” “Work is the effort you put into moving something to another place. “Thank you so much boss” said Billy Bob Joe. Well Billy Bob Joe was not done and he knew that. He used all of his new Simple Machines that he learned about and got his work done faster. In fact he did it so fast he got a raise and a promotion! So Billy Bob Joe started to love Simple Machines and he loved them now and forever. The End Glossary Lever – a bar that turns around one point or it measures weight Simple Machine – machines that makes things easier Fulcrum – a support under a lever Pulley – a simple machine that is used to lift heavy or light weights Wheel and Axle – a simple machine that allows you to turn something or it turns by itself around an axle Gear – a simple machine with teeth like ends that fit into other gears Inclined Plane – a flat plane tilted and used to push boxes into a truck mostly Wedge – a simple machine that fits in between something and splits it apart. Screw – a simple machine that holds things together Work – the effort you put into moving one thing from one place to another place.
