Story 1: Colonists were upset that land in the
colonies was becoming too expensive, so they
wanted to expand westward
Story 2: As English people moved into the Ohio
Valley, they upset the Natives and French settlers
because they began taking resources from the them
such as land and furs
Story 3: France was angry that English colonists were
selling land in what they believed was their territory.
The French sent troops into the Ohio Valley
Story 4: England began to send military into the
Ohio region, and they tried to build military forts.
This angered the French who attacked the fort
Between 1754 and 1763, English
soldiers (from the American colonies
and England) battled the French in
the colonial territories. The Native
Americans had a choice of fighting
with the French against the English,
or with the English against the French.
If you were a Native American, which
side would you choose?
The English & English Colonists…
• Want to use your land for fur trading
and farming
• Think that Native Americans are
“savages”
• Want to expand their territory further
to the West
• Have a steadily growing population in
America
The French & French colonists…
• Want to use your land for fur trading
• Have married Native Americans and
raised families with them in America
• Have many missionaries living in
the west that try to convert Native
Americans to Christianity
• Have a relatively small population in
America
• If the French and
English are going to
have war, which side will
your Native American
tribe be allies with?
Explain why you chose
that answer!
Most of the Natives actually
chose to fight with the …
French
England and the English
colonists
vs.
France and most Native
Americans

1) Before the French and Indian War
began, Benjamin Franklin and other
colonial delegates created the Albany
Plan of Union. Why do you think the
colonies rejected Franklin’s plan?
– Because they wanted to control what went
on in their own colonies and were scared of
a central government taking away that
power
2) What does each section of the snake
represent?
– Each section represents a colony or a colonial
region
3) What message is Benjamin Franklin
trying to send with this cartoon?
– His message is that the colonists need to unite
together to be stronger and to survive against
outside forces. He created the cartoon to
promote the failed Albany Plan of Union. The
cartoon will also be used during the American
Revolution
4) England was in debt due to the
French and Indian War. How do
you think England was going to
pay back these debts?
–England pays for the French and
Indian War by taxing their own
citizens and taxing the colonists.
These taxes includes the Sugar Act
and the Stamp Act.
5) If you were a colonist, how would
you feel about the Proclamation Line of
1763?
–The colonists were upset that they
were not allowed to settle to the west
of the line. Their belief was that
settling to the west was one of the
main reasons for the French and
Indian War
