Strategies of definition: 1. Function – The job or function 2. Example – What it looks like 3. Negation – What it is not Create a thesis that clearly states your definition of heroism and illustrates your unique opinion. MY THESIS Heroism means different things to different people. To me, a hero is a the life force that offers the very thing that is needed at the exact time that it becomes necessary or required. 1. Reflect on all you have learned about heroes over the course of our research and reading. 2. Decide what is your opinion of what a hero is. 3. Write a thesis on your opinion of the concept of heroism. Do not focus on one particular person or thing in your statement, but rather focus on the whole idea of heroism. At a time in her country when girls are not allowed to receive education, a young girl stepped forward and nearly gave her life to shine a light on light on this injustice. The brutal shooting of Malala Yousafazi may not have changed this unjust law, but I know that her heroic efforts will be the spark for change. A hero is the life force that offers the very thing that is needed at the exact time that it is needed. Malala is one example of such a life force. Decide how you want to begin your essay. Think about what would grab the attention of the reader. Write a draft of your Introduction Paragraph Paragraph 1 – Function A heroes job is to make a difference when, where for whom it is needed. If it can be viewed as a hero then in my opinion it makes a difference in the world. You can make a difference by seeing a need and responding to it bravely. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. saw a need for civil justice in the south and stepped up bravely. Cesar Chavez saw a need to fight for the rights of Mexican workers in America and made a big difference. The purpose of a hero is to see and change injustice. What is your opinion about the FUNCTION of a hero? Brainstorm ideas using page 53 of Springboard. Write one paragraph that explains your unique opinion of the FUNCTION of a hero. Paragraph 2 #Examples There are so many examples besides Dr. King, Malala, Mr. Chavezof heroes that are there for the underdog or the ___________ at just the right time. What are some excellent examples that support your unique opinion of what a hero is and it’s function? Brainstorm ideas using page 53 of Springboard. Write one paragraph that explains your opinion of good examples of a hero based on YOUR thesis. Paragraph #3 Negation You are not a hero if you are not willing to speak out and stand up for what is right. How can you be considered a hero if you don’t have the courage to try and change things for the better when you have an opportunity. Even when you don’t see an opportunity for change a hero makes one. A hero can not be a coward! They must believe in what it is they are doing from the heart. Feel the fear and do it anyway is their motto. Based on your thesis, a hero is not what? Brainstorm adjectives that explain your unique opinion about what a hero is not. Write one paragraph that explains your opinion on the NEGATION of a heroism. (A hero is the life force that offers the very thing that is needed at the exact time that it is needed.) Whether it is an educator that encourages young people to be their best, a politician who stands for right in the face of greed, or even a young girl who risks her life in the hopes that other young girls can have a better life, the offering is the same. Bravery, love and a sense of justice that is the thing which is needed just at the right time to make a difference. Explain why the reader should care about heroism.
