Montresor’s home was free of his servants due to
the carnival.
The drunkenness at the carnival made it easier for
Fortunato to be persuaded.
The costumes at the carnival allowed them to be
seen together without being recognized by others
as being seen together.
The noise of the carnival prevented anyone from

 mood is a literary element that evokes certain
feelings or vibes in readers through words and
descriptions.
 Usually, mood is referred to as the atmosphere of
a literary piece, as it creates an emotional situation
that surrounds the readers.
•usually perceived as threatening, suspenseful, ominous.
•The threatening mood can be felt in Montresor’s words
early in the story:
“I continued as was my wont, to smile in his face, and he
did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of
his immolation.”
That he can smile at his enemy while imagining his
death sets up a mood, or feeling, of something dark or
evil hidden beneath the surface.
