Objective
SWBAT evaluate similarities and differences
between their home neighborhood, Crown
Heights, Brooklyn and South Side Chicago.

South Side, Chicago
• Population changed over time:
posh white community  heavily
orthodox Jewish community 
Turbulent race relations between
Caribbean-Americans and
Orthodox Jewish population.
• Crown Heights is a contrast
between beautiful architecture
and vacant, run-down buildings.
It contains a variety of people
ranging from dark bearded,
suited Hasidism, and colorfully
dressed Afro-Caribbean residents
living tolerantly of one another.
• Heavy immigration at the end of
the 19th century, however races
were self-separated.
• Post-Reconstruction, black
southerners migrated to Chicago
in large numbers. The majority of
African-Americans in Chicago
were living on the South Side.
• The South Side has had a history
of racial segregation.

As a class, we will walk around Crown Heights,
and take note of what we see in our
neighborhood. We will focus on finding
different similarities and differences to what we
have seen of South Side, Chicago.
Assignment
Using the photos presented in this slideshow along
with your personal knowledge of Crown Heights
and the knowledge you have gathered from A
Raisin in the Sun to compare Crown Heights to
South Side, Chicago. Use evidence from the
pictures and text to support your claim.
This will be used as an activity to help us describe
setting and understand how the setting can affect
the plot.
