Shaw STEM Lab 2013 First thing’s first… Create a new Word document. Ensure you have titled it correctly Names Date Team # Engagement # Mr. Ochs Mrs. Zinser October 22, 2013 Team #8 Engagement #1 This orientation will be Engagement #1 Save this document into your “Engagement 1” folder. Word Documents Requirements The text must be BLACK The Word Document must be WHITE The font must be something readable, if Mr. Ochs can’t read it, he won’t. That means a Zero (0) for you! Step #2 After your paper is titled, you and your partner will need to state your objective. It should look something like: “My partner and I would like to learn about the STEM lab.” As part of your objective you will need to create a plan on what you’d expect to accomplish daily. For this orientation, write a plan for what we will be doing this week. On the next slide is an example of what a typical week might look like. Monday Objective, Person of Interest Tuesday Wednesday Begin working Finish building on building our our 1st K’Nex 1st K’Nex project. project and answer questions. Thursday Build our 2nd K’Nex project and take all of our pictures. Friday Incorporate pictures, finish questions, and conclusion. Person of Interest Your Person of Interest will be someone that is related to your engagement. Go back to the class website. On the orientation page find the section on the Person of Interest. You may complete this portion now, or later. Just don’t forget to do it! Pictures There are two methods of taking pictures in the STEM Lab. Using a camera Using the “Print Screen” feature on the computer Go back to the class website, find the PowerPoint entitled “Pictures.” You may complete this portion now or later if you’d like. Just don’t forget to do it! Questions “Mr. Ochs, I have a question!” That’s fantastic! However, look around the room, look how many students there are. Look at how many different engagements there are! Before asking Mr. Ochs your question, try the “Three before me” rule! Try and solve the question in three different ways, before asking Mr. Ochs! Three before me rule Different methods you could try before asking Mr. Ochs for help: Reread the directions or the PowerPoint Maybe you just missed a step! Asking the team that finished the engagement before you They probably figured something out! Search the internet The problem you are facing, someone else has faced before. See if the answer to your question is on the web somewhere! Engagements Look at the 18 different engagements. With your partner pick the top 3 engagements you’d like to do. Write at least five (5) sentences for each one about what you think you’ll learn and do in this engagement. Rubric Your grade will be determined based upon a rubric. This can be found on the class website. Download the rubric and save a copy of it to each of your engagement folders. You’ll have to do this nine (9) times! Describe how to take a print screen. Summarize where you go to find pictures you took with the camera. 4. In your own words, describe what the “Three before me” rule is and how to use it. 5. What website should you never use to look up information about them? Conclusion Your conclusion is the last and final thing that should be typed on your Word document. This is a summary of what you learned and accomplished. It should not be an explanation of what you did each day. In your Word Document, write five (5) sentences about what you learned as part of the 7th Grade STEM Lab Orientation.
