Kicking and Screaming:
How Video Changed the Way We
Think About Online Learning
Just Over 1 Year Ago… (our story)
• YouTube – Dozens of channels in use across the University
• Vimeo – several channels in use across the University
• Other - Viddler, upload sites like DropBox, Google Drive, etc.
• Hundreds of videos spread across multiple platforms with
thousands of views.
Problems with “Free” Hosting…
•
•
Impossible to manage from a central location
•
Branding – videos show logos of hosting site, not
WilmU
Blackboard Integration – only YouTube has a Mashup
tool for Blackboard, and that only works if the videos
are public
• Quality Control – These videos represent the
University
•
Copyright & Fair Use concerns
Problems with “Free” Hosting…
Did You Know?
•
"The truth is, something close, but not quite." She says.
"Meaning, YouTube always allows the owners to retain
ownership of their work. But what they require in their
terms of service is that you grant to YouTube a nonexclusive, worldwide, perpetual license to freely sublicense, re-distribute, re-publish, monetize, and whatever
they may want to do with your video. They're basically
requiring that you grant YouTube all of the same rights that
you have with your video, short of turning over your rights
to them." (I.e., assigning to YouTube your complete rights.)

Benefits of “Free” Hosting…

•
Scalable across multiple devices, operating systems,
mobile, etc. including legacy devices
Large, remotely hosted companies with near 100%
uptime (YouTube and Vimeo)

• Google isn’t going out of business anytime soon
(Vimeo isn’t likely to either.)
The Alternative…
•
Online Video Platforms (OVPs) that are education
focused can consolidate all videos into one place.
• OVPs offer an infrastructure for uploading, transcoding,
hosting, searching, and delivering video content to
end-users.
• Most OVPs are available as either Software as a
Service (SaaS) on a remote-hosted server, or as a
self-hosted option.
