THE INVENTION OF:
Introduction:
A washing machine is a device
that it used to separate dirt from clothes.
Washing machines come in all different
sizes , colors. They also have different
brands of washing machines too.
Washing machines go all the
way back t the 1600’s and are continued
to be made at this exact moment.
Washing machines did not start of with
automatically wash and front door
openers that we have today, they started
off very simple and hard.
Well, this is how the creation
of the washing machine all begin.
Question #3 : Why did people create the washing
machine?
I think people created the washing machine because people needed a way to
separate the dirt away from their clothes without just using their hands.
Although, from the washing machines in early time you still needed your
hand to turn the handle in order to wash your clothes. It was much more
convenient than just using your bare hands to wash every single piece of
clothing you own.
Question #1 : What is a part or inside the washing
machine that helps with cleaning clothes?
Inside a washing machine
there are many parts that
help remove dirt from
clothes. A washing
machine consist of:
-
Air dove seal
Center post gasket
Outer tub seal
Pump
Hose connections
Those 5 things work together
in order to remove dirt &
stains from your clothes.
Creations from the 1600’s
The first
English patent
under the
category of
washing and
wringing
machines was
issued in
1691.
Creations from the1700’s
The first drawing of a washing
machine appeared in January 1752
issues of
“The Gentlemen’s Magazine” .
n 1782 Henry Sidgier was issued a
British patent for a rotating drum
washer.
The first drum washing machine was
invented in 1797 by James King.
The first United States Patent titled
"Clothes Washing" was granted to
Nathaniel Briggs of New Hampshire in
1797.
Creations from the 1800’s
In 1851 the drum made King’s
machine resemble a modern
machine however it still was hand
powered.
The first rotary washing machine
was patented in 1858 by Hamilton
Smith.
In 1874 William Blackstone built his
wife a machine that removed and
washed away dirt from clothes.
Creations from the 1900’s
Whirlpool washing machines came in 1911.
Electronic washing machines were advised
and discussed in the newspaper as early as
1904.
By the 1940’s , 60% of the 25,000 homes in
the united states had washing machines.
The first fully auto washing machine was
introduced at a state fair in Louisiana in 1937.
The washing machines were not safe because
water often spilt over the side and into the
motor or switch.
Some washing machines were called wringers
around that time because if you didn't use tem
carefully you could cut your fingers off.
The first Laundromat opened in Fort-worth
Texas in 1934.

Question #2 : How did they change overtime?
Washing machines have changed over time because when they first started
washing machines were made of steel and had heavy, dirty, lids. Some of
them were made of wooden tubes. Also, with some of them you had to turn
them with your hands and they were really, really heavy. As of today,
washing machines work with the press of a button and they have clear front
doors so that you can actually sit and watch your clothes wash. But, your
washer would not be complete if you do not have a dryer. !
Question #4 : How does it help people today?
Washing machines help people today because it would be no point in going
somewhere if you do not have clean clothes. Some people would just buy
new clothes every time but after a while you do not want piles and piles of
dirty clothes.
