ARCHERY

History of Archery

• Archery began thousands of years ago. In addition to gathering roots, leaves and nuts, humans desired to included wild game in their diet. Surely, many a small beast was run down and captured by hand, but subduing larger, stronger and faster animals required an extension approach. Tossed stones were followed by spears, and when the bow was invented to launch arrows, hunger was more easily defeated.

Introduction

• Today, many people imagine the Olympic arena when contemplating archery and consider it a sport or a martial art.

• Archery has been shown effective in helping young people experience success as the realize they can accomplish many things with proper instruction.

• Archery has proven to be more accident free than every popular ball sport.

TWO SAFTEY RULES

EMERGENCY WHISTLE SIGNAL

• 5 or more whistle blasts means an emergency has occurred on the range. When you hear this signal you must stop what you’re doing . If you are on the shooting line in the process of shooting an arrow, hold the string securely and gently let the arrow down from full dram and return it to the quiver. Then walk your bow back to the rack and hang it up and wait on the waiting line.

• If you see something unsafe let

the teacher know immediately .

DRY FIRE

A bow should only be drawn when there is an arrow properly attached to the bowstring and it is being pointed in a safe direction toward the target.

To shoot a bow without an arrow is called a “DRY FIRE” and can damage the bow, hurt you or a bystander.

Eleven Steps to Archery Success

1. Stance- Straddle shooting line w/one foot

2. Nock Arrow- Click in your arrow

3. Drawing Hand Set- Grasp the string with all three finger

4. Bow Hand Set-Place your hand in the bow grip

5. Pre- Draw- lift the bow arm from hanging position

6. Draw- Pull or draw the sting

7. Anchor- Touching index finger to the corner of your mouth

8. Aim-

9. Shot Set-up-slight movement forward

10. Release-Open fingers

11. Follow- Through- Finish position / Reflect on shot
