Bellwork #21:
SW discuss proper set up of an introduction paragraph of an
essay and critique samples.
SW apply the guidelines and create their own intro.
SW share what they created with another classmate and get
feedback.
When responding to a prompt, 3 things need to be present in
your introduction:
1)Hook (Catchy Phrase or Situational)
Quotes from important people (cited)
Statistics from a source (cited)
Creative catchy phrases ( don’t use clichés!)
No questions or broad statements.
2)Claim: Essay Topic + Opinion + Three Reasons(If you have 3
prongs)
3)Definition of Prompt: Some people say…other people say
Your Topic: How is the American Dream seen through the eyes
of three different characters? The power even when it’s
fruitless and the influences of living off the “fatta” of the land.
Of Mice and Men is a novel about the American
Dream. The American Dream is shown through many of
the characters views and actions throughout the novel.
I am going to tell you how it is seen through three
characters views and actions. The failure of the
American Dream can be seen through George’s,
Crook’s, and Curley’s wife’s views and actions.
"I remember when I was a little kid on my old man's
chicken ranch. Had two brothers. They was always near me,
always there. Used to sleep right in the same room, right in the
same bed—all three. Had a strawberry patch. Had an
alfalfa patch. Used to turn the chickens out in the alfalfa on a
sunny morning” (36). George’s American Dream can be seen as
simplistic and realistic, yet it still fails. The American Dream can
be painted as the ideal house with the white picket fence, 2.5
kids, a dog, husband/wife, and the perfect life. It is unrealistic for
people to believe they can obtain the perfect life, yet they still
strive for it. This can be seen with many of the characters within
Of Mice and Men. The failure of the American Dream can been
seen through the views and actions of Lennie, Crooks, and
Curley.
Bellwork #22:
SW finish working on their intro paragraphs and begin writing
their body paragraphs.
SW discuss what format body paragraphs should follow and
rules to remember.
Body paragraphs:
• Body paragraphs should follow the claim statement’s order.
• For Example: The failure of the American Dream c be seen
through the views and actions of George, Crooks, and
Curley’s wife.

Body 3: Curley’s American Dream
• Also remember to use topic sentences: The failure of
George’s American Dream can be seen through his views and
actions. And Transition sentences: This failure can also be
seen in Crooks’ life.

then begin writing their conclusion.

knowledge to a set of questions.
SW Work in groups to review for their unit test.
• Write Gallery walk for your bellwork. Take
notes based upon the poster presentations
around the room.
SW apply their knowledge to a unit exam on OMAM.
• No Bellwork- Use this time to look over your
study guide before you turn it in.

hamburger style.
