The Jack-o-lantern custom probably comes from
Irish folklore. As the tale is told, a man named Jack, who
was notorious as a drunkard and trickster.
According to the folk tale, after Jack died, he was
denied entrance to Heaven because of his evil ways, but
he was also denied access to Hell because he had tricked
the devil.
Instead, the devil gave him a single ember to
light his way through the frigid darkness. The ember was
placed inside a hollowed-out turnip to keep it glowing
longer.
These Halloween symbols pop up everywhere
for the season. Witches have been around for
eons and were often thought to have mystical
powers, partly because of their connection to
Satan or the spirit world.
Spells would be cast, witches brews boiled,
and these creatures would often change their
shape during the witchcraft meetings. They
flew on broomsticks, gathered around
cauldrons, made potions involving toads and
kept black cats as pets.
These arachnids have become part of
Halloween imagery. Witches were thought to
invite spiders into their homes as pets,
companions or for use in potions.
They are often affiliated with the extra
creepiness one might find in the overhead
corners of dilapidated houses of haunts or
horrors.
Not to mention, the stories tied to writing
spiders. It is thought that if a writing spider
spins your name in its web, you are destined for
death in the near future.
Bats are harmless creatures and
these mammals actually fly. They eat a
lot of insects such as mosquitoes and
their appetites can be ravenous.
In Eastern countries, bats can
represent good luck. There is an
interesting bat exhibit at Disney’s
Animal Kingdom at Disneyworld. Visitors
may walk through and observe bats (or
not) and learn a lot about this night
creature’s habits.
In both Japan and Western cultures,
a black cat can be linked to either white
or black magic. For today’s Halloween
décor they are most often seen on
porches alongside of pumpkins, and made
from curly black plastic!
Ghosts are the
quintessential Halloween
symbol and kids love to dress
up as ghosts, while adults can
be a lot of different ghostly
types such as pirates, dead
brides and many others.
Ghosts can also come in
different shapes and sizes and
be seen or not, or even half
seen out of the corner of your
eye.
It is a customary practice for
children. Children in costumes,
either in large groups or
accompanied by an adult, travel
from house to house in order to
ask for treats such as candy (or,
in some cultures, money) with the
question "Trick or treat?". The
"trick" is a (usually idle) threat to
perform mischief on the
homeowners or their property if
no treat is given
In northern Ireland, it was customary for Druids to perform
ritualistic ceremonies and make sacrifices to pacify their gods.
The Celts would bring wood and start their Samhain bonfire or,
fire festival, on the hilltop. Often, they would throw the bones of
slaughtered cattle into the flames.
The word "bonfire" is said to
be derived from such "bone
fires." Bonfires and sacrifices
guaranteed that the sun would
burn brightly after a long,
dreary winter. It's common to
witness hundreds of
traditional bonfires in Ireland
every year on Halloween
Night.
Halloween costumes originated from
the Celts when they lit huge
bonfires and celebrated Samhain by
dressing up in elaborate animal skins
and heads to disguise themselves as
spirits and demons . The real ones
couldn't distinguish them as being
human. Their ceremonies consisted
of dancing, telling stories, and
reading fortunes.
Halloween Costume Ideas
Instructions
•
Before the party, tape a small, lightweight prize to
the end of a roll of toilet tissue. Wrap up the prize
in the toilet tissue and continue taping prizes and
wrapping them until the roll is completely
wrapped.
• Ask players to sit in a circle. Each person gets to
wrap the end of the toilet tissue around a body
part (an arm, forehead, waist, ankle and so on)
until she finds a prize. She then tears the paper
and passes the roll to the next player. Play
continues until all the prizes have been unrolled.
What You Need
•Roll of toilet tissue
•10 small prizes, such as plastic critters,
small erasers or tiny candies (1 per
guest)
Instructions
Before play begins, place a few old towels on
the floor, making sure the group of towels
offers just enough standing room for all of the
players.
• As in musical chairs, players must walk around
in a circle whenever the music is playing. When
the music stops, each player scrambles to
stand on a towel Players are allowed to clutch
onto a friend so that they can squeeze onto an
island. Any player who can't stand with both
feet on an island is out.
• After each round, an island is folded (to reduce
the available standing room) or removed
entirely. You may want to switch to a hand
towel or a washcloth for the final rounds. The
last person standing on an island wins.

Materials 1 cup flour
1 cup salt
1/2 cup water
Bowl
Wooden spoon
Fine-point permanent
black marker
Instructions
1.Combine the flour,
salt, and water in a
bowl. Stir the
mixture with a
wooden spoon until
smooth.
2. Divide the dough into
6 equal pieces and
shape each into a ghost,
flattening the base so it
will stand up.
3. Microwave the ghosts on a plate one or
two at a time for 20- to 30-second . Let the
ghosts cool.
4.Use a fine-point permanent black marker
to draw on eyes and a mouth.

Ingredients:

• 2 choc. wafer cookies
• white icing
• red shoestring licorice
Directions:
1. Place one wafer on a plate cover with
icing.
2. Place either 4 long stripes of
shoestring licorice or 8 short, (for
legs)
3. Place the remaining wafer on top.
4. Voila! One gooey yummy cookie! I've
tried this out on various different
groups and the feedback is always
positive.
5. Makes 1 scary spider.
