Survey: Language Immersion
• Equiano picks up new languages easily when they are similar to his
own. Consider these language learning skills:
• 1. Do you listen to words that sound similar to ones in your native
language?

• 3. How similar is your first language to English?
• Conduct a poll to find out how many different languages or dialects
are spoken by 25 class members (or students throughout the
school). What is the most number of languages that one student

1. Why do you think Equiano and his sister refused
the food? (p. 54)
They were too upset to eat.
They didn’t trust their kidnappers or their food.
2. What inferences did Equiano make about slavery?
(p. 54)
Equiano suggests his belief that one of the cruelest
aspects of slavery is the way it often tears apart
families.

They may have felt sorry for him or wanted to keep
him healthy so that they would receive a higher
price at auction.
4. What can we infer about Equiano’s beliefs from
his use of the phrase “sable destroyers of human

His word choice implies that he strongly condemns
these African slave traders, despite their kindness.

Event 2: The Slave Ship
1. Why was Equiano afraid of the crew? (p. 56)
They didn’t look or sound like the people he was
familiar with. He had never seen white people before
or heard the language they were speaking.
2. Why might Equiano’s readers have found his reaction
to the crew ironic?
His white readers would have found it a reversal of
expectation for a black person to be horrified by the
appearance and sound of white people, who were
used to denigrating the looks and speech of blacks.

He thought he and the other captives were going
to be put into the furnace and killed.
4. Why were Equiano and the other prisoners
whipped for refusing to eat? (p. 57)
They were considered property. If a captive died
of starvation, the slavers lost money because
they couldn’t sell him or her.

It was in their interest to keep the slaves
ignorant, so that they were scared of the sailors
and thought they used magic, and therefore
were afraid to attempt a mutiny.

7. What does Equiano mean when he refers to the slavers’
“improvident avarice”? (p. 58)
If the slavers had been less greedy, they would have put
fewer slaves on a ship and created better conditions,
thereby resulting in fewer deaths, more slaves to sell, and
therefore greater profits.
8. What is Equiano trying to persuade his readers to think or
do? (p. 59)
He wants to persuade his readers, who are primarily
white Christians, that slavery and the slave trade are
unnecessarily cruel and contrary to the teachings of
their religion.
