A Quick Overview of the Literature
(Allen & Seaman, 2014, Infographic)
The State of Online Learning: Infographic
(Allen & Seaman, 2014, Infographic)
Best Practices Support the Use of Interactive Conferencing Online
“Research and practice point to the
need for university teachers, new
and experienced and at all levels of
education, to acquire new skills in
creating, managing, and promoting
student participation in interactive
conferencing online.”
(Gregory & Salmon, 2013, p. 259)
Best Practices Support the Use of Interactive Conferencing Online
1. Increase Completion Rates and Retention
2. Eliminate Geographical Barriers
3. Build Online Communities
4. Save Travel Costs
5. Increase Staff Productivity
6. Accommodate Multiple Learning Styles
7. Incorporate Technology in the Classroom
8. Scale Information and Knowledge
9. Leverage Limited Teaching Resources
10. Provide Professional Development
Top Ten Benefits of Using Bb Collaborate
Student Success is Improved
• Increases…
– accessibility
– interaction
• student-to-student &
• student-to-teacher
• Promotes active learning
• Adds Variety
(Macaulay & Dyer, 2011)
Getting Engaged: How to Reach Today’s Students
• There’s nothing new about the connection
between student engagement and student
learning. Educators have been making it
for years.
• What’s changed is the role that technology plays in the classroom.
• What’s changed is the emergence of virtual learning, both real-time and self-paced.
• And what’s changed is the students. They’re digital natives – tech savvy, connected,
always on – who’ll turn learning off if it’s not deeply engaging.
10 Cool Ways to Engage with Blackboard Collaborate
Student Success is Improved
• Outcomes from instruction using web-conferencing software:
– High rates of student
participation
– correct student
responding
– high levels of
student satisfaction
(Hudson, Knight, & Collins, 2012)
Three Types of Courses: Survey of Online Education
Type of course
• There are three types
of courses today
• Bb Collaborate relates
to all three.
% of Content
Delivered Online
Web Facilitated
1 to 29%
Blended /Hybrid
30 to 79%
Online
80+%
(Allen & Seaman, 2014, p. 6)
Enhance Your Face-to-Face Course: Three Ways to Use Collaborate
• If professors are not
lecturing via recorded
sessions online:
• Use a virtual meeting
room for: Office hours,
brainstorming, course
meeting rooms.
• 2/3rds of that is not
recorded lectures.
Web-enhanced Courses Foster Student Interaction
“Web-enhanced courses
– are face-to-face courses that use any form
of electronic media to post information,
deliver content, provide learning
resources, and foster student interaction
outside the classroom.
– They are not distance education courses,
because instruction takes place in the
classroom.
– Technology is used to support instruction
instead of being the main source of course
delivery”
(“About web-enhanced courses,” 2013)
Web-Conferencing Enhances Face-to-Face Courses
One way to respond to educational change is
thru course design & redesign
• Maximizes students’ learning
• Helps ensure courses efficiently/effectively
prepare students
During the last ten years, a third course design
option has emerged in higher education,
including legal education—a blended course that
combines the face-to-face and online formats.
(Hess, 2013, p. 51)
