1) The principle (v. 21)
2) The rationale (vv. 22-25)
 Read Jn 14:22.
 John is making it clear to us that this is
not Judas Iscariot, but Judas the son of
James (see Lk 6:16).
 This Judas asked Jesus how He would
reveal Himself to the disciples and not
to the world.
~ He was asking, “How is it that Jesus
would not show Himself not only
publicly but in undeniable and
irresistible splendor and majesty!”
 Judas – and the other disciples – may
still have been expecting Jesus to
establish an earthly kingdom and
overthrow Rome.
 Not everyone would understand Christ’s
message, and a hardened and
unbelieving world would not believe
even someone who had come back
from the dead (Lk 16:31).
~ Jesus reveals Himself most deeply
to those who love and obey Him.
 Read Jn 14:23.
 “… and We will come to him and make
Our abode with him.”
~ The context here is individual rather
than corporate indwelling.
~ In v. 2, He prepares “dwelling-places”
for them.
~ Here, He joins with the Father in
making a “dwelling-place” in them.
 Here Jesus offered the best comfort
of all: there wouldn’t really be any
separation from Him for His
disciples!
~ TO THOSE WHO LOVE JESUS, THE
FATHER AND THE SON WILL COME
AND MAKE A PERMANENT HOME
WITH THEM.
 The clause, “… and make Our abode
with him” indicates a very close and
intimate relationship.
 THIS PRESENCE IS VERY REAL.
~ Its operation can be felt and
experienced.
~ Warren Wiersbe: “It is one thing for
us to go to heaven and quite
something else for heaven to come to
us! There is a deeper fellowship with
the Son and the Father for those who
love Him, seek Him, and obey Him.
We experience His peace as we
commune with the Father and the Son
in love….”
 This “coming”, this “appearing” is an
anticipation of the final, consummating
experience of God after the Second
Coming! (See Rev 21:3, 22.)
 Read Jn 14:24a.
~ Mere duty will not generate
obedience to Christ – at least not
true and consistent and lasting
obedience; only love for Him can
do that.
 We must be reminded whose words
these are to be obeyed: Read Jn
14:24b.
~ The words of Jesus are the words
of the Father who sent Him!
 Rejecting the precepts and
commandments of Christ is a very
serious matter!
 Some people have taught that keeping
Jesus’ words is too strict or demanding
or unrealistic.
~ The real question isn’t really about
what commands to keep or how to
keep them, but whether we still love
Jesus.
 TRUE OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST
COMES FROM LOVE AND TRUST.
~ The quality of our obedience is a
direct reflection of our love for
Christ.
 Read Jn 14:25.
~ “These things”: refers both to the
Lord’s words in this discourse, and
all His teaching up to this very
moment.
