The Forest Floor
The forest floor receives the least
amount of sunlight, so not many
things are not able to live there. Some
of the animals that live on the forest
floor are gorillas, jaguars, and
millipedes.

more about the
forest floor!
The Forest Floor
The forest floor is also covered with dead
plants and vegetation. The animals that live
there use the dead plants as food, along with
other animals.

The Herb Layer
The herb layer does also not receive a lot of
sunlight. Wildflowers, ferns, and grasses grow
here. The vegetation is very thick in the herb
layer. Some of the animals that inhabit this
layer are turtles, mice, insects, and some birds.

The Shrub Layer
The shrub layer is the third layer of the
rainforest. Some animals that inhabit this layer
are snakes, sloths, monkeys, and insects. Some
predators live in this layer of the rain forest.
Also some birds spend some of their time in
this layer to find food.

The Understory
The understory layer is the fourth layer of the
rain forest. This layer has so many leaves and
vines that many animals cannot get through.
Some of the creatures that live here are
butterflies, monkeys, and insects. The
understory has the most number of insects out
of all the layers.

The Canopy
The canopy is the fifth layer in the rain forest.
The canopy is located 80-150 feet above the
ground. This is where all of the sunlight is
absorbed so it can’t reach the forest floor.

the canopy!
The Canopy
There are a lot of flowers and
fruits in this layer. The vines that
Tarzan swings on grow here, and
they are called Lianas. Many
animals live in this layer; some of
them are toucans, monkeys, and
tree frogs.

The Emergent Layer
The emergent layer is the sixth layer, which is at
the top of the rain forest. It is around 200 feet
above the forest floor. The trees in this layer have
to be able to handle strong winds. Some of them
even have seeds that are able to be moved by the
wind. Some animals that live in this layer are bats
and eagles.
