Updates on Social Studies and Science S/CDN December 13, 2012 Mary Cahill, Director of Curriculum Casey Jakubowski, Social Studies Associate Will Jaacks, Science Associate EngageNY.org Social Studies Timeline •September 2012 Board of Regents discusses a recommendation to amend Commissioner’s Regulations to require two separate year-long courses in Global History and Geography (yielding two Social Studies credits) with the second year-long course culminating in a new Regents Examination. The new examination would replace the current Regents Examination in Global History and Geography. •2011-2012 Content Advisory Panel met to advise on the Social Studies Framework •September 2012 K-8 Frameworks posted on EngageNY for public comment until October 11. •October 2012 Feedback was reviewed by Content Advisory Panel and they made recommendations for revisions. They also made recommendations on changes to Global History and Geography •November 2012 The Board directed staff to seek public input on the proposed changes to the Global History and Geography. EngageNY.org 2 Social Studies Timeline •December 2012 SED Staff, in conjunction with the Content Advisory Panel and local professional organizations, sought public input from practitioners and stakeholders throughout the state in early December utilizing survey responses. Over 300 Social Studies professionals, representing all sections of the state responded. •January 2013 SED will post the Draft 9-12 Social Studies Common Core frameworks to EngageNY.com, and seek public comment (Jan.-Mar.) •April 2013 Staff anticipates returning to the Board with a framework that has been revised to reflect public input and Common Core Learning Standards expectations.
